Recent reports suggest that Apple, Qualcomm, and MediaTek are all gearing up to launch their first 2nm chipsets this year. Apple is expected to utilize TSMC’s N2 node, while Qualcomm and MediaTek may transition to the slightly upgraded N2P process, which would offer marginal performance improvements alongside reliable wafer supply.
Xiaomi 18: The First Flagship with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6
According to a post on Weibo by Smart Pikachu, upcoming flagship devices powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and MediaTek’s Dimensity 9600 are anticipated to coincide with the launch of the iPhone 18> in September. This potentially mirrors the timeline from last year when Apple introduced the iPhone 17 series, managing to secure a several-week lead over its competitors.
- iPhone 17 Launch: September 9
- Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Launch: September 24
- Dimensity 9500 Launch: September 22
Additionally, a tipster known as Smart Chip Insider has indicated that the A20 and A20 Pro, along with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, should also debut within the same month. If this information holds true, it seems likely that Apple may no longer enjoy its previous advantage. However, the company’s established supply chain still remains a potent tool for ensuring its timely availability in the market.

Historically, when the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and Dimensity 9500 were released, it took weeks for them to hit the shelves, while the iPhone 17 quickly penetrated various markets. This time, both Qualcomm and MediaTek will need to coordinate closely with TSMC to ensure that there are no shipment delays for their SoCs, and also collaborate with smartphone partners to synchronize flagship releases with that of Apple’s iPhone 18. Achieving this synchronization will prove challenging, especially in light of the ongoing DRAM crisis, but anticipation remains high as we await further updates.
