In the captivating world of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, players consistently seek out Metal Slimes for an efficient way to amass experience points. However, confronting these elusive creatures poses a significant challenge. Typically, players can only inflict a mere 1 point of damage on them—provided they don’t evade the attacks—while their speed allows them to escape battles just as swiftly as they appear.
Though skills such as the Warrior’s Metal Slash can inflict additional damage on Metal Slimes, they still fall short of ensuring a certain victory each time you encounter one.
Interesting strategies exist within the game, particularly hidden within the mechanics of the Pirate Vocation. This class is accessible once players master both the Thief and Sailor Vocations. Utilizing the Pirate Vocation presents a compelling method for consistently capturing every Metal Slime before they make their escape.
Introducing the Pirate Vocation: Your Metal Slime Slayer

Central to this strategy is the Hatchet Man skill, which unlocks at Vocation Level 2 for Pirates. According to its in-game description, this skill may not connect frequently, but when it does, it delivers a powerful critical hit that can make all the difference in battle.
As a player, timing when this skill will land can be uncertain—however, the AI is more adept at determining these moments. This gives players a significant edge in combat.
The AI Advantage

In Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, enabling Auto-Battling by pressing the Options/Start/+ button allows characters to execute actions autonomously, selecting the most effective offensive strategies and healing when necessary.
This feature has an intriguing consequence: any AI-controlled party member with the Pirate Vocation is likely to employ Hatchet Man when the chances of connecting are high. Against Metal Slimes, these opportunities arise frequently, enhancing the likelihood of success.
During my own experiences at The Beacon, my Pirate Ruff effortlessly took down five groups of Liquid Metal Slimes using Hatchet Man with no misses. However, it’s worth noting a few exceptions arise when the AI’s decision-making process appears to falter, leading it to use Hatchet Man even when the chance of hitting isn’t promising:
- When the only remaining enemies are Liquid Metal Slimes
- If the character lacks skills effective against enemies other than Metal Slimes
In these specific instances, Hatchet Man saw some misses. Nevertheless, in battles featuring multiple Liquid Slimes, I still achieved victory for at least one, which highlights the overall effectiveness of this approach.
In my successful encounters with Liquid Metal Slimes at The Beacon, the party experienced a remarkable level increase from 33 to 37. Each successful group yielded around 30, 000 EXP with the Experience Earned difficulty slider set to normal. Therefore, equipping characters with the Pirate Vocation proves essential for efficient experience grinding.
This concludes our exploration of the Vocation system in the Master of Alltrades series. Stay tuned for more insights and strategies!
