While many iPhone users dismiss the Back Tap feature as a mere novelty for simple tasks like taking screenshots, it can be transformed into an invaluable tool for enhancing privacy. By integrating Back Tap with Shortcuts, I’ve developed a method to secure my phone instantly when someone’s peering over my shoulder or when I’m in an environment where privacy is essential.
Understanding the iPhone Back Tap Feature
The Back Tap feature on iPhones, introduced in iOS 14, can be likened to an invisible button on the back of your device. This feature is compatible with iPhone models 8 and newer, and it allows users to assign specific functions to either a double or triple tap.
Despite its potential, Back Tap remains underutilized. Many users opt for more conventional options like the Control Center, Siri, or the Action Button, which can feel more intuitive. However, what sets Back Tap apart is its ability to trigger Shortcuts, enabling automations that might require navigating through menus or opening Control Center—actions that can often be too slow for immediate privacy needs.
A Quick Solution for Privacy with Back Tap
We’ve all experienced scenarios where sensitive information is visible to onlookers, such as emails, bank statements, or personal photos. In these moments, fumbling with the Control Center to adjust brightness or activate Do Not Disturb can take precious seconds, inadvertently drawing attention to your screen.
In contrast, a discreet triple tap on the back of your phone can instantly:
- Dim screen brightness to 0%.
- Switch to Dark Mode, enhancing privacy by making the screen harder to read from an angle.
- Pause any audio or video being played.
- Activate a restrictive Privacy Focus Mode to mute incoming notifications.
Creating an Instant Privacy Mode Using Shortcuts
To set up your privacy mode, start by creating a dedicated automation in the Shortcuts app:
- Open the Shortcuts app and tap the + icon at the top right to create a new shortcut.
- Rename the shortcut by tapping the arrow next to New Shortcut and typing in Privacy Mode.
- In the Search Action bar, add the following actions in this order:
- Set Brightness: to 0%.
- Set Appearance: choose Turn Dark Mode On.
- Play/Pause: select Pause.
- Set Focus: choose Turn Do Not Disturb On (or your specific Privacy Focus).Set it to Until Turned Off.
After setting up, click the Play button to test if your screen darkens and silences successfully. If successful, you’re ready to activate it with Back Tap.
Establishing Your Privacy Focus Mode
Simply enabling Do Not Disturb isn’t sufficient to maintain privacy. Under certain conditions, such as low brightness in dark settings or with Attention-Aware features, a bright notification can still expose sensitive information. It’s essential to configure a Focus mode that blocks these notifications effectively.
Begin this process by navigating to Settings → Focus. You can either use the default Do Not Disturb option or create a custom Privacy Focus.
For any selected focus mode, tap Options, and ensure that Dim Lock Screen is activated to keep the screen discreet, even when locked. Additionally, activate Hide Notification Badges to prevent notification banners from revealing information.
Tip: Under Focus Filters, consider adding filters for specific apps, such as WhatsApp, Slack, or banking applications, to maintain total discretion with incoming alerts.
Linking Privacy Mode to Back Tap
Now it’s time to associate your new Privacy Mode with the Back Tap feature. Navigate to Settings → Accessibility → Touch and scroll down to find Back Tap. Select Triple Tap for triggering privacy, as it minimizes the risk of accidental activation.
Next, scroll down to the Shortcuts section, select Privacy Mode, and a blue checkmark will confirm the connection.
Exiting or Resetting Privacy Mode
This step is optional but can enhance the usability of your setup. Since your screen will be at 0% brightness, resetting your phone’s settings in bright environments can be challenging without assistance.
Create an additional shortcut named Reset with the following actions:
- Set Brightness: adjust to your preferred level.
- Turn Do Not Disturb Off.
- Play/Pause: adjust to Play/Pause.
- Turn Light Mode On (if desired).
Return to Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Back Tap and link Double Tap to this Reset shortcut. This establishes a complete cycle to darken your screen swiftly with a Triple Tap and restore functionality with a Double Tap.
Having implemented this automation, consider exploring additional Back Tap functionalities or delve into creating more sophisticated Siri Shortcuts for your iPhone.
