Transforming Gemini’s Interface: Tips to Maximize Your Productivity

Despite the advancements in Gemini’s AI capabilities, its web interface still feels outdated. Users face challenges while navigating lengthy conversations, management of chats is lacking, and the layout underutilizes screen real estate. To enhance my experience, I’ve incorporated the Gemini Voyager extension, which significantly improves the interface and aligns with my workflow.

Introducing Gemini Voyager: Your Ultimate Gemini Enhancement Tool

Gemini Voyager is a free, open-source extension compatible with both Chrome (and Chromium-based browsers) and Firefox. It functions as a user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) overlay, adding essential features directly into the browser DOM. This enhancement is crucial for improving the overall Gemini browsing experience, allowing for modifications such as customizable folders, altered panel layouts, and new button integrations.

The primary appeal of Gemini Voyager lies in its operation: all adjustments occur locally within your browser, ensuring that no data is sent to external servers. For functionalities requiring synchronization, users can link their Google Drive accounts, or alternatively, utilize the manual import/export feature provided by the extension.

Here’s how Gemini Voyager helps me address various shortcomings of the Gemini web interface:

Combat Endless Scrolling with Chat Folders

The frustration of endlessly scrolling through the Gemini chat list prompted me to install Gemini Voyager. This innovative extension introduces chat folders, enabling users to categorize discussions into custom folders effectively. You can create specific folders for work-related or personal chats, streamlining the organization of your conversations.

Once installed, you’ll notice a new Folders section above your chat list. Creating a folder is simple; just click the Plus (+) icon, name your new folder, and fill it by dragging chats into it or through the ‘Move to folder’ option in the chat’s dropdown menu.

Moreover, the ability to construct subfolders allows for even greater organization, with the option to color-code them for easy identification. While these folders are stored locally, they can be exported or synchronized with your Google Drive, facilitating access across multiple devices.

Tailoring the Gemini Layout to My Preferences

Among the various layout issues I’ve experienced with Gemini, I found the unnecessary 600 pixels of empty space on either side of the chat particularly frustrating. This valuable space could otherwise enhance the chat experience. Fortunately, Gemini Voyager offers numerous layout customizations that allow users to adjust the size of panels and chat areas according to personal preference.

Accessing layout controls is convenient via the extension button in the toolbar. Here, adjustable sliders allow modifications to chat width, sidebar width, and input area width. Personally, I’ve opted for a slightly wider chat interface at 70%, and the adjustments can be viewed in real-time.

Additionally, I appreciate the ability to auto-hide the sidebar, which helps me maintain focus on the chat, revealing the sidebar only when I hover the cursor over its area.

Easy Navigation in Lengthy Conversations

I am not alone in my dislike for scrolling through extensive message threads in Gemini to locate specific information. Gemini Voyager addresses this common frustration by offering several useful navigation aids. Notably, it provides visible dots on the scrollbar corresponding to messages in a conversation. Users can hover over these dots to preview content and click to jump directly to specific messages.

The extension also supports keyboard shortcuts with K and J to swiftly navigate forward or back between messages. While I prefer the feature that allows Gemini to auto-navigate to the latest response, there’s also an option to keep the chat stationary while reviewing previous messages.

Streamlined Management of Your Prompt Library

Previously, I used Google Keep to manage my prompts, but that system became unwieldy until I discovered the prompt manager included with Gemini Voyager. This tool enables the creation of a dedicated Gemini prompt library that simplifies usage within chats—eliminating tedious search or copy/paste processes.

A floating button opens the Prompt Manager, where you can create and organize your prompts using tags. To utilize a prompt, simply click on it, and it will automatically copy to your clipboard. Additionally, this functionality can be activated for use with various other AI chatbots through the extension’s settings.

Moreover, there are numerous additional functionalities worth exploring, such as the ability to remove the watermark from images in Gemini.
