Carrying a separate toolkit for each minor measurement task isn’t always feasible. Fortunately, your smartphone is already equipped to serve as a multifunctional measurement tool. Explore how you can transform your phone into a powerful device capable of measuring physical dimensions, angles, sound levels, and even light—all conveniently from your pocket.

Using Your Phone Camera to Measure Object Size

Among the various measurements we commonly perform, measuring the size of objects is undoubtedly the most frequent. The AR Ruler App excels in this area. Leveraging your phone’s camera, this app delivers highly accurate measurements and provides a real-time ruler for measuring objects in multiple dimensions.

Here’s how to use it: initiate a new project, direct your camera to one end of the object, and tap the yellow Plus (+) button to begin. Move to the opposite end and press the Plus (+) button again to get the total measurement displayed. You can customize your measurement units via the Settings menu located in the top right corner.

This app is particularly reliable for flat surfaces, but if you require advanced measurement capabilities, such as diameter measurement, consider upgrading to the premium version.

Tilt Your Phone to Measure Angles

Your smartphone can function as a digital protractor to accurately gauge angles, making it ideal for ensuring that surfaces and objects are properly aligned. For this purpose, I recommend the Clinometer app, which operates using your phone’s accelerometer and gyroscope for precise 180-degree measurements.

Simply hold your phone upright and tilt it to assess the angle in relation to gravity. With flat sides, most smartphones are convenient for determining the angle of various objects by resting the phone against them. Additionally, this app features a functionality for checking an object’s levelness. Just place your phone horizontally on its back, and the blue digital bubble level tool will appear. While I don’t frequently use this feature, it came in handy when I needed to level my cooktop.

Both functionalities are accessible for free, although some features, like the relative angle tool and angle view in camera mode, require in-app purchases.

Distance Measurement Made Easy with Your Camera

If you’re curious about the distance of an object from your location, the Smart Measure app can help you determine it with impressive accuracy. Utilizing trigonometry, the app measures distance based on your height and the angle of your phone. While it can measure up to 75 meters, I find it most effective for shorter distances—typically under 30 meters—making it ideal for indoor use and in my garden.

To operate the app, align the crosshair with the base of the object on the ground. The distance will be displayed in real-time. The default phone height is set at 4.9 feet, so adjust it by tapping the H icon if necessary. For measuring longer distances—up to 1 kilometer—consider the Smart Distance app.

Turn Your Phone into a Light Meter

While I may not be a professional photographer, I certainly appreciate the significance of proper lighting, especially in night photography. Adequate lighting conditions prevent your camera from raising its ISO excessively, which can result in noise. For optimal lighting, I rely on the Lux Light Meter app during important photo sessions when quality is non-negotiable.

This application leverages your phone’s light sensor to measure local illumination. To gauge the light levels, simply hold your phone before the subject. The app will display the current lux level, complete with a graph illustrating historical changes over time.

For optimal results, I aim to achieve at least 500 lux for indoor photography, with 1000 lux being my ultimate goal; however, reaching that level without direct lighting on the subject can be challenging.

Evaluate Sound Levels in Decibels

As someone who experiences tinnitus, monitoring sound levels is imperative for avoiding sources of excessive noise. The Sound Decibel Meter app assists me in accurately measuring sound levels and includes a history chart for tracking sound exposure over time.

This app uses your device’s microphone to accurately detect sound levels, with the capability to measure up to 100 dB. Besides identifying noisy environments, it has practical applications in daily life, such as adjusting sound balance in speakers or assessing appliance noise levels against manufacturer specifications. It’s a handy tool for locating quiet zones (under 50 dB) conducive for work or study.

While these applications do not substitute for professional tools, they provide impressively close estimates for measurements related to size, distance, and angles when compared to traditional measuring instruments. For specialized needs, consider exploring how to measure altitude with your phone.
