In today’s interconnected world, sharing information has become a commonplace practice, whether it’s revealing our location on apps like Find My, sharing photo albums with loved ones, or even disclosing passwords for various services. However, the fluid nature of relationships can sometimes lead us to seek privacy and detachment from past connections.

The answer lies within the Safety Check feature, which efficiently enables you to revoke access to your personal data, halt location sharing, and adjust your privacy settings across multiple applications—in one streamlined process.

Understanding Safety Check: Your Privacy Lifeline

Safety Check is an innovative feature located in the settings of your iPhone, specifically designed to enhance the security of individuals whose safety may be compromised. Unlike standard privacy settings that primarily serve advertising needs or app functionality, Safety Check is tailored to protect individuals by revoking access granted to others, including ex-partners who previously had permissions.

This tool is especially vital for anyone transitioning out of a relationship and looking to safeguard their location data or lock an ex-partner out of shared accounts. With Safety Check, all sharing permissions are presented in one consolidated dashboard, eliminating the need to recall individual data shares, such as your Location or Health information.

Activating Emergency Reset for Immediate Safeguards

The Emergency Reset option provides a rapid response for users fearing their information is compromised, resetting all sharing settings to the highest privacy standard. To initiate, navigate to Settings.

Scroll down and select Privacy & Security, then find and tap on Safety Check, followed by Emergency Reset.

A screen will appear, detailing the actions to be taken. Confirm by tapping Start Emergency Reset.

It is important to note that unlike a factory reset, this feature does not erase your photos, contacts, or apps; instead, it directly addresses your sharing permissions.

Actions taken include terminating location sharing via Find My with all selected individuals, revoking permissions for other apps concerning Camera, Microphone, Location, and Bluetooth. Furthermore, it resets your privacy settings related to Photos, Contacts, and Calendars, and ensures you can sign out of your Apple ID across all devices the other person may access.

If you’re not facing an immediate threat but wish to review and adjust your sharing permissions—perhaps following a breakup or simply for peace of mind—the Manage Sharing & Access option might be more suitable. This method provides a more detailed overview, enabling you to selectively manage who has access to your information while allowing some connections to remain intact.

Step 1: Review Individuals with Access

To proceed, select the data points you wish to discontinue sharing and tap Stop Sharing. After confirming, you will move to the next step.

Step 2: Review Applications with Permissions

The second step involves accessing a comprehensive list of all installed applications that have permissions to your Location, Microphone, Camera, Bluetooth, Health, Contacts, and Photos. Should you identify any unfamiliar applications or permissions that seem inappropriate, revoke access without hesitation.

Step 3: Ensure Account Security

If you’ve previously designated a partner or family member as an emergency contact, remember they will be advised should you activate the Emergency SOS feature or if Crash Detection is triggered. In this section, review your existing Emergency Contacts, removing any that might jeopardize your safety by tapping the red minus (-) button and confirming with Delete. Once only trustworthy contacts remain, proceed by tapping Continue.

In instances where you find yourself in an unsafe environment, this button ensures that you can rapidly conceal your actions. Should someone enter the space while you’re making adjustments, it provides a quick way to divert attention.

You’ll find this option in the upper right corner of every screen within the Safety Check menu. By selecting Quick Exit, any changes made thus far will be saved automatically, and the Settings app will close, swiftly returning you to your Home Screen.

To an outside observer, it will appear as though you were simply looking at your Home Screen, thus allowing you to safeguard yourself while preserving your privacy adjustments.

Understanding Post-Reset Scenarios

A common concern is whether the other party will be notified when you cease sharing your location. Fortunately, Apple does not send such notifications. Instead, if they look at the Find My app, they will merely see that your location is no longer available, or your dot will disappear from the map. This absence, however, could be discernible to a stalker over time.

Moreover, employing the Emergency Reset may cause you to lose access to shared smart devices, such as home security systems or smart locks. Regaining control might require the original admin to reinvite you, or you may need to reconfigure the devices to guarantee your safety.

Limitations of Safety Check

While the Safety Check tool is robust, it does not constitute a comprehensive defense against all types of monitoring. Its primary function is to manage permissions within Apple’s ecosystem.

Notably, it does not prevent mobile carriers from tracking your location via cell tower triangulation. Essential Post-Reset Security Measures

Update Your Apple ID Password

If someone has access to your device passcode, it’s possible they also know your Apple ID credentials. While Safety Check may prompt you to change this, if you missed that step, do it immediately to prevent unauthorized access from a browser.

Enable Stolen Device Protection

iOS provides a feature known as Stolen Device Protection, which necessitates Face ID for high-security actions such as changing your Apple ID password or accessing saved passwords when your iPhone is outside a recognized location, like home.

This measure is crucial, as it can prevent an abuser from reversing the safety measures you have just implemented.

Verify Trusted Devices
