Steps to Bring Your Stolen iPhone Back Online

Steps to Bring Your Stolen iPhone Back Online

When an iPhone is stolen, the thief’s primary objective is to disable tracking capabilities as quickly as possible. Within moments of the theft, they typically activate Airplane Mode, which disconnects your device from the internet and significantly complicates its recovery through the Find My network. Although Find My can still utilize Bluetooth to connect to surrounding Apple devices when offline, this method is considerably less effective than a cellular connection.

How Airplane Mode Thwarts Find My iPhone

Find My iPhone utilizes GPS coordinates along with a reliable method for transmitting these coordinates to Apple’s servers. Engaging Airplane Mode disables this transmission, granting the thief precious seconds to dismantle the device for parts or exploit security loopholes.

Activating Airplane Mode is a quick action that does not require any authentication, making it an easy way to sever a device’s online connection. Moreover, Control Center is accessible from the Lock Screen by default, allowing anyone in possession of your phone to toggle Airplane Mode without needing to unlock it. To mitigate this risk, adjust your settings:

  • Open Settings and scroll down to tap Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode).Enter the passcode.
  • Scroll to the Allow Access When Locked section.
  • Set Control Center to Off.

With these settings, if your phone is locked, a thief cannot easily activate Airplane Mode. They will have to either leave the device connected to the cellular network, allowing you to track it, or power it down entirely.

Developing an Anti-Airplane Mode Automation

Even with your phone locked and Control Center disabled, what happens if someone snatches your phone while you’re still using it? In that case, your phone is likely unlocked, granting the thief unhindered access to the Control Center. To counteract this scenario, Apple’s Shortcuts app can be utilized to create an automated response that acts as a trap. If Airplane Mode is activated, your phone can lock itself and immediately re-establish internet connectivity:

  • Access the Shortcuts app, then click on the Automation tab.
  • Tap New Automation or the + icon in the top right corner.
  • Select Airplane Mode from the list and ensure that Is Turned On is checked. Opt for Run Immediately.
  • Toggle Notify When Run to OFF to avoid alerting the thief.
  • Select Next.

On the subsequent screen, tap Create New Shortcut. Next, utilize the Search Action bar to add the following actions sequentially:

  • Lock Screen: Search for and add the Lock Screen action to ensure that if Airplane Mode is toggled, the screen will lock and require Face ID for re-entry.
  • Set Airplane Mode: Adjust this to Turn Airplane Mode Off.
  • Set Mobile Data: Change this to Turn Mobile Data On.
  • Set Wi-Fi: Alter this to Turn Wi-Fi On to improve location accuracy if the device moves within range of public networks.
  • Set Brightness (Optional): Set the brightness to 0%, which may mislead the thief into thinking the phone has powered down.

Finalize your setup by tapping Done. After completing this automation, if someone activates Airplane Mode on your unlocked device, it will automatically lock them out and reestablish internet connectivity, facilitating your ability to send a remote erase command from another device.

Activating Lost Mode

The purpose of this Shortcuts automation is to grant you time to act. Given that the thief is temporarily restricted from accessing the device and it is still online, prompt action is necessary before they switch off the device completely.

As soon as you detect that your iPhone is missing, use a friend’s phone to open a web browser or access Find My on another iPhone. Sign in to your iCloud account, select your missing device, and immediately activate Lost Mode.

Activating Lost Mode suspends all Apple Pay cards, disables Face ID and Touch ID functionality, and displays a custom message with a backup contact number on the screen. Because your Shortcuts setup has maintained the device’s online status, your command can rapidly reach the phone.

Scope of This Automation’s Protection

While this automation offers notable advantages, it is crucial to understand its limitations. Notably, the physical SIM card tray represents a vulnerability. If the thief realizes they cannot access Airplane Mode, they may resort to extracting your SIM card with a paperclip, effectively disabling cellular data access—regardless of the automation in place.

To bolster this security measure, you might consider upgrading from a physical SIM card to an eSIM. An eSIM is a digital alternative that cannot be physically removed, ensuring that your phone remains connected to the cellular network as long as it has power, thereby keeping your Find My tracking active.

Important Limitations

Although this automation serves as an additional layer of security, it has certain drawbacks. Firstly, it cannot stop a thief from simply powering off the device by holding down the physical buttons. However, even if they turn it off, they cannot access your personal data if the phone is locked.

Additionally, this automation may restrict your ability to use Airplane Mode during legitimate instances, such as when you’re boarding a flight. When attempting to activate it, the phone will lock you out and reactivate data connectivity. To manage your automation effectively during travel:

  • Open the Shortcuts app and navigate to the Automation section.
  • Select your automation and choose Don’t Run.
  • Tap Done.

This approach will temporarily pause the automation without erasing your setup. Once you’re in a suitable environment where you can reactivate the protection, simply revisit the app and change it back to Run Immediately.

For optimal security, also ensure that Stolen Device Protection is enabled within your Face ID & Passcode settings.
