Starfield’s PS5 Launch Performance: Estimated 140K Copies Sold, Ranking Midway Among Recent Xbox-Published Titles

Starfield Launches on PS5: Sales Insights and Market Positioning

Starfield marked its anticipated debut on the PlayStation 5 last week, coinciding with the release of the Free Lanes update and the Terran Armada DLC. According to a recent analysis from Alinea Analytics, the space exploration RPG achieved 140, 000 sales in its first week. While this figure might seem encouraging at first glance, the report suggests that the performance of Starfield on PS5 could be regarded as middling.

Comparative Sales Performance

When juxtaposed with other titles from Xbox Game Studios released on PS5 in the past six months, Starfield’s performance appears mediocre. It falls in the middle when compared to titles such as The Outer Worlds 2, Avowed, Ninja Gaiden 4, Age of Empires IV, and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, demonstrating that its launch didn’t quite meet the high expectations that surrounded it.

A bar chart titled 'The PS5 version of Starfield has sold 140K copies in one week' shows 'Starfield' selling 140K PlayStation copies, less than 'Ninja Gaiden 4' at 257K and 'Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024' at 245K, but more than 'Avowed' at 54K, 'Age of Empires IV' at 52K, and 'South of Midnight' at 16K.

However, it’s crucial to note that Starfield didn’t lag far behind The Outer Worlds 2, which took third place in this comparison. In contrast to Avowed in fifth, Starfield significantly outpaced its performance. Alinea Analytics emphasizes that this comparison strictly pertains to Xbox-published games and does not factor in Call of Duty titles. As the report indicates, Starfield is off to “a middling start.”

Fastest-Selling Title on the List

Despite its underwhelming ranking in overall sales, Starfield stands out as the fastest-selling title among this group, achieving key sales milestones quicker than others. Notably, Ninja Gaiden 4 managed only about 100, 000 sales in the same timeframe, highlighting the significant gap between the two.

Yet, Starfield still has considerable ground to cover before reaching the sales heights of Xbox’s bestsellers on PS5. For example, Forza Horizon 5 is reported to have surpassed 5.7 million copies sold on the platform. Meanwhile, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle has also demonstrated impressive sales, reportedly matching its Xbox counterpart and even exceeding its Steam sales figures. Additionally, Gears of War: Reloaded has predominantly garnered its 1 million copies sold from PlayStation, with 70% of its sales attributed to PS5 users.

Demographics of Starfield Players on PS5

The demographic engaging with Starfield on PS5 predominantly comprises existing Bethesda fans. Many players have prior experience with titles like Fallout 4, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion – Remastered. There’s also an evident overlap in player bases between The Outer Worlds 2 and Starfield, along with a notable intersection with No Man’s Sky enthusiasts.

A bar chart titled 'Starfield players on PS5: What else have they been playing?' shows that 81% have played Fallout 4, followed by Skyrim (66%), No Man's Sky (58%), Oblivion (44%), Crimson Desert (33%), Resident Evil Requiem (29%), and The Outer Worlds 2 (17%).

Outlook for Future Sales

While the initial sales have been categorized as “middling, ”the trajectory suggests that Starfield may gradually enhance its sales figures on PS5 compared to the other six titles featured in Alinea’s report. Only time will tell how the game develops in terms of popularity and market success moving forward.

As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, many anticipate that Starfield will leverage further updates and DLCs to bolster its appeal and sales performance.
