Exciting Updates Coming to Sea of Thieves: The Devil’s Roar Returns
Sea of Thieves, developed by Rare, originally unveiled the perilous volcanic region known as the Devil’s Roar back in 2018. Although this cluster of islands has remained on the sidelines since its debut, significant changes are looming with the impending seasonal update titled Return to the Devil’s Roar.
New Challenges: Encounter the Eternal Guard
This update introduces a formidable new adversary: the Eternal Guard. This ancient foe possesses the ability to become nearly invisible while engaging with players, using a powerful spear to execute ranged assaults. Upon defeat, players can collect keys that unlock access to intriguing new locations throughout the region.
Exploring the Sanctuaries of the Banished
Adventurers will discover the Sanctuaries of the Banished, subterranean structures scattered across the Devil’s Roar islands. To enter these mysterious chambers, players must use a key dropped by an Eternal Guard. Inside, they will find coveted “banished ancient treasure, ”which can be looted and sold to trading companies for both riches and prestige.
Discover Powerful Weapons
In addition to treasure, players can uncover the new Trident of the Banished, an upgraded variant of the rare ranged weapon. This weapon boasts quicker-charging energy projectiles that inflict greater damage, promising to elevate combat strategies for crews encountering hostile foes.
What’s Next for the Devil’s Roar?
To further enrich the gaming experience, two members of the Smugglers’ League have relocated to the Devil’s Roar, providing players with enhanced access. Rare is also planning to introduce new events focused on this volcanic region later in the season. As with every new season, an array of ship and player cosmetics will be available through both free and premium battle passes, in addition to rewards that can be earned by completing specific deeds and commendations.
The Return to the Devil’s Roar update is set to launch on December 11, 2025, and will be available across multiple platforms, including PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
Looking Ahead: Custom Servers for 2026
Earlier this year, Rare outlined exciting plans for 2026, including the long-awaited introduction of custom servers. This feature will enable premium subscribers to create fully customizable gameplay sessions, incorporating unique commands, alterations to game rules, weather controls, and advanced cinematic camera tools for enhanced storytelling.
