Reactions to NVIDIA DLSS 5: A Developer’s Perspective

The recent unveiling of NVIDIA DLSS 5 during the GTC 2026 conference has sparked extensive debate within the gaming community. Reactions have predominantly polarized, with many either championing or criticizing the new technology. However, a critical conversation regarding its feasibility from a game developer’s viewpoint remains notably absent.

Insights from Samson’s Development Team

In the context of the game Samson, which currently employs DLSS 4.5 alongside ray tracing, I inquired about their assessment of DLSS 5.

Fredrik Lönn: We did look at the reveal, but DLSS 5 is not something we considered for Samson. Also, it does not seem like it is production-ready just yet as we launch our game.

Artistic Integrity and Production Efficiency

Lönn emphasized the importance of maintaining artistic integrity in character design. The development team has meticulously crafted detailed facial models, aiming to preserve their intended aesthetics in-game. For DLSS 5 to be beneficial, they envision its integration within the character production workflow, allowing for artistic oversight. While the future potential of Neural Rendering and DLSS 5 promises significant time savings in production, Lönn pointed out a key concern: the need for widespread hardware support, as currently, access to such capabilities is limited.

The Necessity of Multi-Platform Support

The viability of DLSS 5 in games like Samson hinges on its support across all targeted platforms. In a previous opinion piece discussing the DLSS 5 rollout, I highlighted the necessity for its integration into game development tools to enhance creative control for developers. At present, the technology primarily relies on a game’s color and motion vectors, offering only limited adjustments such as intensity and color grading. A more comprehensive implementation into popular engines, notably Unreal Engine (the foundation for Samson: A Tyndalston Story), could fulfill this need.

Challenges Ahead: Hardware Limitations

Despite the avenues for greater integration, the aspiration for universal platform support for DLSS 5 appears increasingly unrealistic. NVIDIA’s evident strategy aims to drive consumer adoption of GeForce hardware, making broad availability seem counterproductive. Moreover, the performance demonstrated during the GTC 2026 event utilized two GeForce RTX 5090 graphics cards. Although NVIDIA has indicated future aspirations to operate on a single card, this performance benchmark remains significantly beyond the capabilities of current-generation consoles, including the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S.

Conclusions: A Divided Future?

If the consensus among developers requires these conditions to be met before embracing DLSS 5, the technology might face significant hurdles ahead. Nonetheless, it remains to be seen whether segments of the development community will adopt it without stringent requirements.
