RPCS3 Now Supports Loading “Encrypted” PlayStation 3 Disc ISOs

The widely-used PlayStation 3 emulator, RPCS3, has made significant strides towards enhancing user experience by introducing support for encrypted ISO files. This development marks a pivotal step closer to offering true plug-and-play capabilities for disc backups.

RPCS3 Streamlines the ISO Loading Process

As one of the leading PS3 emulators in the gaming community, RPCS3 has consistently evolved over the past decade, with recent updates extending its functionality. A few months ago, developers implemented a method for users to mount ISO files directly, eliminating the need to extract these files first.

In a recent announcement via an X post, the RPCS3 team revealed a new capability: the emulator can now directly load encrypted PS3 ISO files. To utilize this feature, users are required to have the corresponding disc key alongside the game image, allowing for faster game loading. Previously, users were constrained to using decrypted ISOs, necessitating additional steps to obtain a properly formatted file. This involved utilizing a decryption tool to convert the ISO, creating an often cumbersome process.

This important update effectively removes a fundamental step in the process, simplifying how users can run PS3 games on RPCS3. Such advancements allow gamers to backup their titles with formats that are much closer to the original discs, promoting better preservation practices. The preservation benefits are significant, as encrypted disc images can retain a structure that mirrors the original Blu-ray layout.

While this upgrade may seem minor at first glance, it substantially enhances user convenience. Although it may not offer the same level of convenience as launching PS3 titles through Steam—a recent integration that many users have welcomed—eliminating an extra step is a substantial improvement. Currently, RPCS3 supports over 70% of all PS3 titles, with some remaining games being playable, albeit with minor graphical issues and bugs.
