Reasons to Be Cautious About Trusting Microsoft Edge’s VPN Service

While the allure of free privacy tools is tempting, the Microsoft Edge VPN may not fulfill its promises. Even though it may appear to safeguard your online activities, the reality is that it falls short of being a conventional VPN and might not even be operational when you think it is.

Understanding Microsoft Edge VPN

Microsoft has discreetly included a feature known as the Edge Secure Network VPN within its Edge browser. This solution requires no additional installations or complicated configurations, which sounds appealing at first. As advertised by Microsoft, it leverages “VPN technology” to shield your sensitive data from unauthorized access. This development likely compensates for the removal of the VPN service that was previously part of Microsoft 365.

In theory, the concept of a VPN is straightforward. It reroutes your internet traffic through an encrypted tunnel, enhancing both security and anonymity. Furthermore, the company has teamed up with Cloudflare to facilitate this functionality, allowing the Edge VPN to obscure your device’s identity while directing your traffic through Cloudflare’s nearest server.

However, it’s essential to know that the VPN feature is not enabled by default. To activate it, you will need to navigate through the Edge settings: click the three dots in the top right corner, select Settings, then go to Privacy, search, and services followed by Security. From there, toggle Use Microsoft Edge Secure Network to the on position.

Limitations of the Edge VPN

Despite Microsoft’s promotional efforts, the Edge VPN does not meet the standards of a conventional VPN. Even Cloudflare, the partner behind this service, acknowledges its deviation from traditional VPN functionality.

This tool offers limited privacy, confined solely to the Edge browser. Utilizing HTTP CONNECT, it operates as a Privacy Proxy Platform, which means your traffic is obscured via a proxy server located near you. Notably, this service demands you to log in with your Microsoft account, and it authenticates users through this account to establish a private connection.

Privacy researcher Sooraj Sathyanarayanan highlights a critical aspect: this creates a two-party trust model, where Microsoft purportedly does not disclose your complete identity to Cloudflare, and Cloudflare is unable to view your browsing traffic.

Nevertheless, it’s evident that the Edge Secure Network lacks the robustness typical of a true VPN. It’s branded specifically as a “browser VPN, ” which inherently limits its capabilities.

Significant Drawbacks of Edge VPN

Key shortcomings of the Edge VPN include a restriction that prevents users from streaming content from popular services. The VPN will not activate while accessing these platforms, which undermines its utility for entertainment purposes.

Additionally, users with free Microsoft accounts are capped at five gigabytes of data per month. Frequent use of the VPN can lead to exhausting this limit rapidly, leaving you vulnerable for the remainder of the month.

Another limitation involves location preference. The service automatically routes data to the nearest data center, enabling Microsoft to track your general whereabouts. Consequently, if you search for “restaurants nearby, ” you might receive localized suggestions—not ideal for true anonymity.

Moreover, the VPN’s default settings are categorized as “Optimized.” It will only activate if it detects public Wi-Fi or an insecure network, or if a site lacks a valid security certificate. This raises concerns, as you are essentially relying on Microsoft to determine the safety of your connection. If it misjudges a risky public Wi-Fi network, your sensitive data could be transmitted without the protective measures of a VPN.

You can modify these settings. To do so, go to Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Security. If the Microsoft Edge Secure Network is enabled, three options will appear: Select Sites, Optimized, and All Sites.

I recommend opting for either Select Sites or All Sites. If you choose Select Sites, configure the specific sites you wish to use with the Secure Network option. Keep in mind that opting for All Sites can deplete your data allowance swiftly, so it’s prudent to toggle the VPN on or off according to your internet needs. When activated, a shield icon will appear to the right of your address bar for convenience.

Is Microsoft Edge VPN a Viable Option?

The Microsoft Edge Secure Network does provide an additional level of security while using the Edge browser. Although it is completely free to use, the requirement to link it to a Microsoft account presents a potential risk of associating your personal information with your supposed anonymous browsing activities.

In contrast, most other free browser VPNs do not necessitate account creation. While it is true that many free browser VPNs only cover browser traffic, premium options typically deliver a more comprehensive VPN experience.

While the Edge VPN can be beneficial on public Wi-Fi networks, ensure that it is operational when handling sensitive information. It’s worth noting that free VPNs often lack robust security features. For enhanced privacy, consider adopting a conventional, system-wide VPN solution or exploring alternative services. If you have doubts about your protection level, testing for VPN leaks may help identify if your real IP address is being exposed at any point.
