Qualcomm’s Datacenter CPU Rumors Arise as Agentic AI Accelerates Rapidly

Qualcomm is reportedly in the final stages of developing a new datacenter CPU, poised to meet the escalating demands of Agentic AI applications.

Qualcomm’s Upcoming Datacenter CPU: Timely Response to Rising Demand for Agentic AI

Recent speculation suggests that Qualcomm is crafting a specialized datacenter CPU built on the Arm architecture. Expectations for such a chip have been mounting, but the latest rumors indicate that an official announcement could take place as early as June this year, perfectly aligning with the increasing requirements from Agentic AI clients.

This isn’t the first mention of a dedicated CPU from Qualcomm. The company has been gradually expanding its datacenter solutions, which currently include accelerator cards and racks primarily based on its Hexagon NPUs and AI accelerators for inference tasks. However, Qualcomm’s recruitment strategy signals a more profound approach to CPU development.

In 2022, the company took significant steps by hiring a former chief architect from Intel’s Xeon team and acquiring Ventana Micro Systems, a startup focused on RISC-V-based CPUs. Furthermore, this past May, Qualcomm entered a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with HUMAIN, a Saudi AI company, dedicated to developing next-gen AI and CPU technologies.

Moreover, Qualcomm is exploring Intel’s EMIB and advanced packaging technologies as viable components for their CPU initiatives. The integration of Qualcomm’s systems with NVIDIA’s tools could also be significant; as reported by CNBC, the forthcoming CPUs might be optimized to work alongside NVIDIA chips. Currently, NVIDIA employs its Vera/Grace CPUs in AI servers while also using Intel Xeon in specific instances.
