In today’s competitive tech landscape, where price manipulation and competitor undermining can often overshadow fair practices, Qualcomm appears to be taking a commendable stance. Unlike Apple, which has recently faced accusations of deliberate hindrance against rivals, Qualcomm is opting not to intentionally scale back the capabilities of its base Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chip to push customers toward its more expensive ‘Pro’ variant.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6: A Viable Option for OEMs

Recent insights from the Weibo tipster, Digital Chat Station, shed light on the similarities between the standard and Pro editions of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chip. According to the translation of their findings:
“Exclusively, the SM8950/Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen6 is also a new generation of TSMC 2nm, with a 2+3+3 new generation Oryan CPU architecture, sharing 16MB L2 cache, Adreno 845 GPU with 6 slices, 12MB GMEM, 6MB SLC, and supports up to LPDDR5X+UFS 5.0… Compared to the Pro version, it has reduced some cache and peripheral specifications, and is used in the mid-range/high-end models of the iteration line.”
Both variants are expected to incorporate custom Oryon CPU cores arranged in a 2+3+3 layout. The vanilla model will likely offer 16MB of L2 cache, along with Generalized Memory Management (GMEM) of 12MB and a System Level Cache (SLC) of 16MB. Previous reports indicated that the Pro version would also utilize a 16MB L2 cache, marking their specifications more akin than previously anticipated.
Based on Digital Chat Station’s assertion that the vanilla model has “reduced some cache and peripheral specifications, ”it can be inferred that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro will feature upgraded memory caches and support for LPDDR6 technology, while its standard counterpart is expected to operationalize LPDDR5X.
This specification overlap suggests that the performance gap between the two variants might be minimal. Consequently, many OEMs might favor the vanilla version, finding it sufficiently robust for their needs.
Furthermore, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is anticipated to be equipped with the Adreno 845 GPU featuring six slices and a dedicated graphics cache of 12MB. This architecture, which Qualcomm first introduced with the Snapdragon 8 Elite, enhances the GPU’s efficiency by dividing it into distinct slices. Each slice operates independently with its clock speed, shader cores, and fixed-function blocks. Comparatively, the earlier Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 employed a three-slice GPU structure, suggesting a significant performance leap for the latest iteration.
Digital Chat Station has also indicated that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro will be supplemented with an upgraded 18MB graphics cache, further bolstering its performance capabilities.
