Proper Methods for Cleaning the WinSxS Folder in Windows

Have you ever checked your C drive and noticed a substantial folder labeled “WinSxS”? If you’re running low on storage space, it may seem like a tempting option to clean it up. However, before proceeding, it’s crucial to understand what WinSxS is and the appropriate methods for cleaning it. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know.

Understanding the WinSxS Folder: Its Purpose and Size

The WinSxS folder serves a vital role within your system, housing all component store files that typically consume between 8GB and 12GB of disk space on your C drive. This repository comprises essential files related to Windows updates, system applications, and various services, acting as a safeguard for crucial system data, especially during recovery operations.

Component store files are leveraged during critical system tasks, such as:

System recovery following boot failures or corruption.
Rolling back updates and drivers when issues arise.
Facilitating the addition of server roles through the server manager interface.
Executing programs via side-by-side assemblies.

Here are some of the key data types stored in the WinSxS folder, crucial for maintaining system integrity:

Installation files for Windows updates, enabling rollback to previous versions.
Archived versions of drivers for restoration if complications occur.
Essential Windows system files needed for repairing corrupted data, such as those invoked by the SFC/Scannow command.
Update files for all installed versions of the. NET Framework.
Components related to additional language packs, including handwriting recognition and text-to-speech engines.
Files for optional features, like legacy Windows applications and virtualization capabilities (e.g., Hyper-V and WSL).

As you regularly use your system, the amount of data stored in the WinSxS folder increases. Although Windows intermittently attempts to clean up this folder, it may not effectively address accumulated data on an active system. Measuring the Actual Size of the WinSxS Folder

Before initiating a cleanup, it’s essential to determine the actual size of the WinSxS folder to assess whether it necessitates attention. You might consider simply navigating to “C:\Windows, ”right-clicking on the WinSxS folder, and selecting Properties to view its size. Yet, this method does not reveal the true size of the folder.

The discrepancy arises because the WinSxS folder employs a technique called Hard Linking, allowing multiple references to the same files without creating duplicates. As a result, traditional methods may misrepresent the space consumed by the folder.

To accurately assess the size of the component store, use the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool via PowerShell:

Open Windows Search, type “powershell, ” then right-click on Windows PowerShell and choose Run as administrator. In the PowerShell window, input the following command:

dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore

After executing the command, Windows will analyze the component store and provide a detailed report on space utilization. Look for the entry labeled Actual Size of the Component Store. For reference, my actual size was reported at 9.98GB, along with a recommendation regarding component store cleanup.

How to Clean Up the WinSxS Folder

Should Windows prompt you for a component store cleanup, you can proceed with another command. If no cleanup is suggested, it indicates that Windows has recently performed this task, and further action is unnecessary—unless you prefer a more thorough reset.

In PowerShell, execute the following command to initiate cleanup:

dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

Running PowerShell command to clean WinSxS Folder

This command will trigger the cleanup process, which may take some time to complete. Once finished, close the PowerShell window and restart your system. In my experience, this process freed approximately 3.3 GB of space.

For a more extensive “nuclear”option, you can utilize a command that completely removes update components but retains a backup of current system files. While this action significantly reduces the size of the WinSxS folder, it also eliminates your ability to rollback system changes and use recovery tools, potentially complicating future troubleshooting endeavors.

To fully reset the WinSxS folder in Windows, input the following command in PowerShell:

Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase

It is advisable to reevaluate the size of the WinSxS folder periodically, as the automatic cleanup often falls short due to strict requirements.
