Phantom Blade Zero Game Director Emphasizes Human Craftsmanship Over AI

This morning, Liang Qiwei, Game Director of Phantom Blade Zero, addressed the gaming community through a detailed letter on X. Known publicly as Soulframe, he reiterated the studio’s dedication to authentic artistic creation and vowed to prioritize human artistry over AI-generated components in their games. Most notably, it appears that the studio is quietly stepping back from support for NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 technology.

Initial Commitment to DLSS 5 Technology

Phantom Blade Zero was initially promoted as one of the pioneering titles to embrace NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 technology, joining a lineup that includes other notable games such as AION 2, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Resident Evil Requiem.

Reassessment of AI Technologies

In his letter, the director stated:

Every single piece of content in our game has been crafted by the hands of real artists.We will not use AI visual tech that could alter our artists’ original creative intent.

This indicates a clear shift in philosophy. Although S-GAME initially appeared to support the technology, the backlash following a controversial unveiling may have prompted a reevaluation, particularly as many gamers viewed it as merely an AI filter that detracts from the developers’ true artistic vision. Previously, we explored varying perspectives on the early impressions of DLSS 5, but this marks the first instance of a developer reversing their endorsement of the technology.

NVIDIA’s Challenges Amidst Changing Opinions

This decision is certainly not favorable for NVIDIA, especially given the other challenges it faces. Earlier this week, the studio behind the upcoming game Samson, Liquid Swords, expressed their views on the DLSS technology but chose to remain neutral on ideological grounds. They noted that effective integration into their character production pipeline would be crucial and highlighted challenges in ensuring compatibility across multiple platforms.

Commitment to Authenticity in Phantom Blade Zero

Returning to Phantom Blade Zero, Soulframe emphasized that the game’s entire production process is firmly rooted in human effort. From character models created using 3D scans of voice actors to meticulously crafted lip-syncing in both Chinese and English, and even hand-drawn maps utilizing traditional Chinese brushes and rice paper, every aspect reflects a commitment to authenticity and artistry.

The development of Phantom Blade Zero is progressing toward its anticipated launch on September 9, 2026, for PC and PlayStation 5.
