Microsoft’s Notepad Enhancements: Tables and Real-time AI Streaming Features
In November 2025, Microsoft rolled out the “Create a table”feature for Windows Insiders, and this functionality is now available to all Windows 11 users. If you have a Copilot+ PC, you will also appreciate the new AI text streaming feature in Notepad, which provides a real-time typing experience similar to that of ChatGPT. This exciting enhancement is expected to be accessible on non-AI PCs in the near future.
Simplified Table Creation in Notepad
Creating tables in Notepad is a straightforward process that caters to basic needs without overwhelming complexity. While Microsoft’s Word offers more advanced features for table creation, this new addition in Notepad suffices for simpler tasks, thanks to its combination of functionality and a lightweight design utilizing Markdown-style formatting.
How Tables Work in Notepad
When you initiate a table in Notepad, it saves data as plain text in the Markdown format. You can easily add rows or columns by simply inserting the necessary cell segments. Specifically, adding a column involves expanding each row with an additional | … | segment, while adding a new row appends another | … | at the bottom.

Customizing Your Tables
During our testing, it was noted that clicking the new Table button in the formatting toolbar presents users with a grid picker, allowing for an intuitive selection of rows and columns using the cursor. Additionally, you have the option to manually input your desired row or column count, making this feature both versatile and user-friendly.

After creating a table, you can enter text and format the content within the cells, including adding options like bold, italic, underlined text, and hyperlinks. Notably, this feature remains resource-efficient, operating seamlessly without significant CPU or RAM usage, as all table details are preserved in a simple.txt format.
Enhanced Functionality and User Control
Notepad’s functionality allows for easy management of table components. Right-clicking within the table grants you options to insert or delete both rows and columns or even remove the entire table. You can conveniently select parts of the table without the hassle of dragging across cells. If your table appears misaligned, the “Fit columns to window width” feature helps organize your layout effectively.
Managing Notepad Features
The “Create a table”capability is enabled by default, but users have the flexibility to disable it. By accessing the Settings, you can turn off Markdown formatting, which will remove tables along with other formatting features such as bold and italics. Additionally, the Copilot features linked to Microsoft 365 Copilot can also be turned off from this menu.

Introducing AI Text Streaming
For those with a Copilot+ PC, the new AI text streaming feature allows users to generate text in real-time. This enhancement enables Notepad to display responses instantly as you type, creating an interactive experience similar to popular AI chatbots like ChatGPT. Previously, the generated text appeared only after completion, but now it mimics real-time typing, providing immediate feedback—a feature set to roll out to non-AI PCs soon.
Conclusion
Microsoft’s Notepad updates, including the table creation feature and AI text streaming, highlight the ongoing evolution of productivity tools in the digital age. With improved user experience and functionality, these enhancements cater to both casual users and more demanding tasks.
