Nioh 3 maintains a familiar co-op experience reminiscent of its predecessors and Team Ninja’s recent titles. Whether you are a seasoned player of the series or a newcomer interested in cooperative gameplay, this guide will provide you with essential insights and details on engaging in co-op missions, including item requirements and summoning mechanics.
Engaging in Co-op Play
Hosting as a Summoner
When you want to enlist the help of fellow players during missions, the hosting process is straightforward. Simply access a Shrine while online, navigate to the Co-op menu, and select “Summon Visitor.”By offering an Ochoko Cup, you can call for assistance.
Should no players respond or if you choose to end the session prematurely, your Ochoko Cups will be returned to you. Additionally, you have the option to set a password, allowing only your friends to join your game. Keep in mind that up to two players can join your session as visitors, making it a handy option for tough bosses or challenging missions.
Joining as a Visitor
If you prefer to assist others, you can opt to become a Visitor. From any Shrine, access the Co-op Menu and select “Become a Visitor.”You can filter your search or input a password to refine your options. The game will update the available sessions in line with your criteria.
However, bear in mind that this type of co-op has limitations. Visitors cannot open chests or doors, so your role is primarily to support the host in their quest. This mode also provides an opportunity to acquire level-appropriate gear, as enemy loot will scale according to your character’s level rather than that of the hosting player. Once the mission is complete, all players will automatically return to their respective worlds.
Expedition Mode Explained
For players seeking extended co-op experiences beyond immediate challenges, the Expedition Mode is the ideal solution. This mode demands that all participants agree on the mission at hand, leading to two distinct sub-modes: Story Mode and Mission Mode. While both modes serve similar functions, choosing the appropriate one depends on your gameplay intentions.
- Story Mode
In Story Mode, you partner with another player to navigate the game’s campaign. This mode encompasses various activities including open-world exploration and main missions. It’s important to note that only the host can progress the story; any changes resulting from story events will only be reflected in their world.
The game prioritizes the host in several areas: when the host prays at a Shrine, all enemies respawn, and every player in the session is healed. Whenever the host prays, all participants are teleported to them as well.
Be aware that an Assist Gauge exists throughout co-op play, depleting with each partner death. If it empties entirely, the mission is lost, but it can be refilled when the host prays at a Shrine.
To initiate a session, select Story Mode from the Co-op menu at any Shrine. You can either host by creating a room or join a session as a guest by browsing available rooms.
- Mission Mode
Mission Mode caters to more experienced players looking to grind previously completed missions alongside others. This section is also ideal for side missions aimed at farming equipment or resources.
In contrast to Story Mode, guests in Mission Mode enjoy a bit more freedom, as HP restoration is limited to the player who prays at the Shrine, including the host. Healing can only occur once per Shrine, so plan accordingly.
Here, players have the independence to engage additional enemies, with no teleportation occurring unless a player prays at a Shrine, which also means enemies won’t respawn.
You can navigate to Mission Mode under the Co-op menu and set specific parameters for creating a room or search for existing sessions. There’s also a Quick Match option available for those indifferent about session specifics.
Keep in mind that you cannot continue playing while awaiting others to join; plan your time effectively.
