Microsoft Launches Fairwater AI Datacenter Ahead of Schedule, Deploying Hundreds of Thousands of NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs

Microsoft has revealed that its state-of-the-art Fairwater facility, which ranks as the most powerful AI data center in the world, is set to go live ahead of its initial timeline. This facility, fueled by NVIDIA’s Blackwell technology, marks a significant advancement in AI infrastructure.

In a recent announcement on X, Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, confirmed the launch of the Fairwater AI Datacenter ahead of schedule. This facility, located in Wisconsin, is set to become the leading AI data center globally.

Initially unveiled in September 2025, the Fairwater center boasts tens of thousands of NVIDIA GB200 GPUs, all leveraging the advanced Blackwell architecture. These GPUs will form a highly integrated cluster capable of handling the enormous demands of Agentic AI tasks.

The sheer scale of the Fairwater facility is astonishing. It not only accommodates a multitude of Blackwell GPUs but also incorporates a fiber optic network extensive enough to circle the Earth four and a half times. When first announced, it was projected to deliver tenfold performance compared to the fastest supercomputers available. To enhance efficiency, the data center will utilize a cutting-edge, closed-loop liquid cooling system, ensuring that no additional water will be needed post-construction.

Engineered to train the next decade of artificial intelligence, our Mount Pleasant facility will house hundreds of thousands of the world’s most powerful NVIDIA GPUs, operating in seamless clusters connected by enough fiber to wrap the planet four times over. These processors will handle training for frontier AI models — delivering ten times the performance of today’s fastest supercomputers.

To accommodate the growing energy demands of its AI operations, Microsoft has already enhanced its capacity by 2 gigawatts—equivalent to the output of two nuclear power plants. The Fairwater facility will rely on renewable energy sources, addressing sustainability amidst its significant energy requirements.

Looking ahead, Microsoft plans to establish multiple additional sites across more than 70 regions within the U. S., constructing facilities similar to Fairwater. This initiative builds on Microsoft’s existing network of 100 operational data centers. However, the rollout of Fairwater and similar projects may impact local environments and the already stretched power supply chains.

In response to concerns over rising energy costs associated with their operations, Microsoft has assured that it will not negatively impact energy prices. The company is proactively investing in energy and electrical infrastructure to support its facilities, including a new 250MW solar power plant in Portage County, while also committing to ecological protection in surrounding areas.
