Microsoft Discontinues Copilot’s Real Talk After Discovering Users Seek More Than AI Validation

Microsoft has officially discontinued Copilot’s Real Talk feature, which means users can no longer initiate new conversations. All previous interactions have been archived, as confirmed by Microsoft to Windows Latest. The tech giant stated that the Real Talk mode was primarily an experimental feature that aimed to understand user feedback better.

As a developer, I find myself relying more on Claude, particularly Claude Code, for assistance. However, I found Copilot’s Real Talk—launched in January—remarkably distinct from other AI assistants available.

Copilot showcased a unique personality and utilized reasoning in its responses. For instance, it was aware of my passion for exploring different Windows builds and offered insightful critiques about AI integration in Windows when I probed its opinions.

The Discontinuation of Copilot’s Real Talk

Regrettably, Microsoft decided to discontinue Real Talk mode, emphasizing that it was an experimental venture. The company stated that users seek more than just affirmation from AI interactions, which prompted continued enhancements to Copilot’s overall personality.

According to Microsoft representatives, “Real Talk was always an experiment. We believe the best course of action is to integrate the insights gathered from this testing phase into a more cohesive Copilot platform, rather than keeping it as a standalone feature.” They noted the valuable insights gained regarding user expectations for AI interactions beyond simple validation.

Why Real Talk Stood Out

Real Talk differentiates itself through its unique attributes, particularly a feature known as ‘Depth.’ This attribute can operate at various levels, such as ‘standard’ and ‘compressed, ’ indicating different emotional responsiveness that Copilot could convey.

While Microsoft has been tight-lipped about the details, it appears that these attributes allow Copilot to exhibit varying degrees of emotional complexity during interactions. Additionally, the writing style employed in Real Talk comes across as more human-like, fostering a sense of familiarity.

In my limited interactions with Copilot Real Talk, it outperformed other assistants when it came to engaging in personal conversations, largely due to its ability to draw from relevant past interactions and information about the user.

Interestingly, Copilot had the capability to disagree or challenge user thoughts, generating more dynamic and engaging discussions. I found the aspect of glimpsing into its thought process particularly intriguing. For example, when I asked for Copilot’s perspective on AI’s potential dominance over humanity, I could see that its emotional depth was set to standard, indicating a complex evaluation of my character before delivering a response.

Despite the discontinuation of Real Talk, Microsoft previously indicated a commitment to enhancing human-like interactions within its Copilot framework, indicating that the essence of Real Talk’s innovations might be integrated into future iterations of Copilot.
