Microsoft has acknowledged that many users prefer to simply press the Win key and type directly in the Start menu’s search bar when looking for applications or personal files. However, the current functionality of Windows 11’s search capabilities has been noted to fall short in predictive accuracy, often suggesting irrelevant applications for user queries. The company is actively working on enhancements to improve the predictability of search results in the Start menu.
In a recent post on X, Diego Baca, Microsoft’s design director, confirmed initiatives aimed at making the app recommendations in the Start menu more reliable. The acknowledgment came after feedback from users who have experienced delays in search results when interacting with the Start menu. Some have indicated that the search doesn’t return results immediately, often requiring a wait of one to two minutes before relevant information appears.
An additional concern raised pertains to the evolving nature of search results as users click on items. For instance, when searching for simple applications like Notepad, the search results might erroneously display web and document links that lead to unintended clicks, further complicating the search experience.
Frustrated users have expressed their preference for a straightforward search process, mentioning that for speed and efficiency, they rely heavily on using the Start menu for rapid access to applications. One such user pointed out the deficiencies of the current system, emphasizing the need for the search to function effectively, especially for power users.
In light of these issues, Microsoft’s design director reassured the community that they are taking these concerns seriously and are committed to making enhancements. Baca stated, “Search performance + predictability from Start is something we are absolutely looking at. I use Start exactly the way you do, too. WinKey + start typing FTW, ” emphasizing his personal investment in the improvement process.
While specific timelines for the rollout of these enhancements remain unclear, Microsoft has informed that internal testing is already underway.
Future Improvements to Windows Search and Taskbar Experience

Additionally, Microsoft has previously outlined plans for a revamped Windows Search experience, emphasizing a desire for more consistent and accurate results that facilitate a better user experience. In a press release dated March 20, 2026, the company stated its commitment to offering “clearer and more trustworthy results, with results from content on your device easy to understand.” These improvements are set to apply across various platforms, including Start, File Explorer, and Settings.
Furthermore, there are potential updates on the horizon regarding the taskbar. Baca hinted at the possibility of reintroducing Windows 10-style functionalities that allow users to reposition the taskbar. In Windows 10, users had the freedom to drag the taskbar to different locations on the screen. Currently, Windows 11 restricts this flexibility, as the taskbar cannot be resized or moved freely.
Encouragingly, Baca responded positively to feedback regarding these features, suggesting that customization options may be expanded, although initially, changes may be limited to Settings modifications.
Active developments are ongoing, including a Windows UI (WinUI)-based Start menu and the possibility of a movable taskbar. A recent video, spotted by Windows Latest, showcased this movable taskbar in an internal build, hinting at the exciting improvements ahead for Windows 11.
While it remains early in the process, there is optimism that these enhancements will contribute to making Windows a more effective and user-friendly operating system within this year.
