Microsoft Acknowledges Accidental Crash of Notepad, Paint, Snipping Tool on Windows 11 and Introduces a Fix

Recent reports indicate that Microsoft has acknowledged a significant issue affecting various built-in applications on Windows 11, including Notepad, Snipping Tool, and Paint. Users have been encountering error code 0x803F8001, which has rendered these vital apps inoperable. Microsoft has attributed this problem to a server-side complication within the Windows Store, which they have confirmed has since been fully addressed.

On a recent Wednesday evening, a user reached out to Windows Latest to report that their Windows 11 system had halted the functionality of all installed applications, including vital tools like Notepad and Microsoft Paint. A glance at the Microsoft support forums reveals a growing list of similar complaints, suggesting that many users have experienced this frustrating issue.

“I got stuck in a loop where my pre-installed Alienware Command Center was giving me an error code 0x803F8001. According to what I looked up, it’s something to do with the Microsoft store not finding an app or failing to do something, ” one user wrote in a Reddit post.

During investigations, Windows Latest found that even essential apps like Windows Security were displaying messages indicating they were unavailable due to the aforementioned error. Users reported seeing notifications stating, “Windows Security is currently not available in your account. Make sure you are signed into the store and try again. Here’s the error code in case you need it: 0x803F8001.”

The situation left many users feeling that their devices were practically “unusable, ”as the error notification continuously interrupted their work. While most applications from the Store were affected, the Alienware Command Center appeared to be one of the most impacted applications, causing repeated activation errors tied to the Store.

In response to the disruption, some users opted to uninstall the problematic applications temporarily but later faced the inconvenience of being unable to reinstall them due to the same error.
