In a surprising revelation, John Romero, the legendary game designer renowned for classic first-person shooters such as Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake, has shared that his most-played game is actually World of Warcraft, developed by Blizzard Entertainment. This MMORPG, distinguished by its vibrant graphics and tab-targeting combat, contrasts sharply with the intense gameplay of Romero’s hallmark titles. As he disclosed to PC Gamer, he invested significant time in Azeroth, dedicating around 3, 000 hours to the game over a five-year span.
A Deep Dive into Azeroth
Romero’s experience with World of Warcraft was immersive; he noted, “I lived in that game every day for five years, ”typically logging six hours a day on weekdays, with even longer sessions on weekends. At that time, he was actively developing an MMO and found studying Blizzard’s successful game invaluable. He aimed to understand the underlying mechanics of such games, asking himself, “Why do I want to do this? What are you thinking about second to second while you’re doing this?”
The Raiding Guild Experience
During his tenure in World of Warcraft, Romero was highly engaged, participating extensively in raids and managing an array of characters, boasting five main characters equipped with optimal gear for different classes and a total of ten characters overall. He efficiently leveled up new characters, stating that he could reach level six in just thirty minutes, showcasing his extensive knowledge of the game’s mechanics.

Romero emphasized the importance of analyzing successful game design. He remarked, “It’s always crucial to look at those successful games and the systems that are in them as a battle-tested system.”With millions of players engaging with World of Warcraft over the years, its design principles offer invaluable lessons for other game developers, enabling them to learn—without direct imitation—about effective gameplay strategies and player engagement.
Romero’s Unrevealed MMO Project
Although the MMORPG Romero was developing remains shrouded in mystery, it’s believed to have been during his tenure at Slipgate Ironworks between 2005 and the latter part of 2010. This timeline aligns well with the peak popularity of World of Warcraft, and while details are scarce, it is known that his project was rooted in an original intellectual property (IP).Additionally, Romero received special acknowledgment for his contributions to the free-to-play MMO Marvel Super Hero Squad Online, which debuted in 2011 from Gazillion Entertainment.
