To activate Name Recognition, follow these straightforward steps:

Open Settings.

Find Sound & Name Recognition within the Hearing section.
Enable the Name Recognition toggle.
Choose the option to Add Name.

After adding your name, you will be prompted to preview the auto-generated pronunciation. Tap Play to listen, and if you’re satisfied, simply select Continue to finalize the setup.

Customizing Pronunciation for Unique Names

If your name is complex or difficult for the iPhone to pronounce, don’t worry. Although Name Recognition currently operates primarily in English, you can self-record your pronunciation to optimize accuracy. To do this:

Enter your name and proceed to the pronunciation screen.
Select Record Your Pronunciation.
Speak your name clearly three times.

Your recording will now be associated with the Name Recognition feature, enabling your iPhone to listen for your name audibly, sending alerts you can view from your lock screen.

Managing Name Recognition Notifications for Uninterrupted Experience

Given the volume of notifications your iPhone receives daily, it’s beneficial to differentiate the Name Recognition alerts with a distinctive sound. Unfortunately, iOS only allows customization for a limited scope of built-in app notifications like Messages or Calendar.

To explore options, head to Settings → Sounds & Haptics.

A helpful tip is to set all your sounds to anything but Rebound, which is the default sound for Name Recognition alerts. Although changing this directly is not possible, altering other notification tones will make it easily recognizable. Whenever you hear the Rebound sound, you’ll immediately know it’s a Name Recognition alert.
