In a groundbreaking move in late 2025, Google impressed technology enthusiasts by enabling the Quick Share functionality of Pixel 10 devices to work seamlessly with Apple’s AirDrop. This innovation allowed users to perform effortless file transfers between Android and iOS ecosystems. Recently, a significant statement from a senior Google executive indicated that this compatibility will expand to a wider range of devices throughout 2026.
Google’s Expansion of AirDrop Compatibility for More Android Devices in 2026
Back in November 2025, it was revealed that Google had reverse-engineered AirDrop, independently creating a solution for seamless file transfers between Pixel 10 devices and a variety of Apple products—including iPhones and iPads. This strategic maneuver showcased Google’s commitment to enhancing user experience across different platforms without any formal support from Apple.
To achieve this interoperability, Google transformed Quick Share from a mere system app stub into a comprehensive APK, with its own listing on the Play Store. This transformation was crucial in making AirDrop compatible with Quick Share on the Pixel 10.
Google has emphasized the security aspects of this integration, detailing the measures taken to ensure a safe communication channel between Quick Share and AirDrop. According to their security blog, these measures include:
- Utilizing the “memory-safe”programming language Rust, which ensures memory safety through strict ownership and borrowing rules enforced at compile time.
- Conducting extensive internal threat assessments, privacy evaluations, and red team penetration tests, alongside collaboration with NetSPI to affirm the security of the file transfer feature.
During a recent press conference at Google’s Pixel Labs tour in Taipei, Eric Kay, Vice President of Engineering for the Android platform, announced the forthcoming expansion of AirDrop interoperability:
“Last year, we launched AirDrop interoperability. In 2026, we’re going to be expanding it to a lot more devices.”
Kay elaborated further:
“We spent a lot of time and energy to make sure that we could build something that was compatible not only with iPhones but also with iPads and MacBooks. Now that we’ve proven it out, we’re working with our partners to expand it into the rest of the ecosystem, and you should see some exciting announcements coming very soon.”
While the specific devices that will gain this new compatibility remain undisclosed, anticipation is building as Google gears up for exciting developments in the near future.
