Studio Atelico Launches AI-Driven Game: Bobium Brawlers
Today, game developer Studio Atelico officially unveiled its inaugural title, Bobium Brawlers. This innovative turn-based card and dice creature battler game is designed specifically for mobile platforms, starting with iOS, and is expected to launch later this year. A standout feature of the game is its AI-powered capability, enabling players to design their creature decks simply by describing them to the Studio Atelico AI Engine.
On-Device AI for Enhanced User Experience
One of the game’s key advantages is the implementation of on-device AI technology. This approach ensures user privacy and reduces latency, alleviating concerns over extra costs associated with cloud computing. However, it’s worth noting that Bobium Brawlers will be compatible only with devices featuring recent versions of the Neural Engine, starting from the iPhone 13 and newer models. The development team has already established multiple decks and card examples to train the AI in creating unique in-game content.
Collaboration with Artists for Authenticity
The AI model was trained using a combination of images and descriptions, allowing players to generate unique artwork in mere minutes. Significantly, Studio Atelico has emphasized that AI is only part of the development process. The studio has contracted artists to design the visual style and produce the majority of the non-creature artwork featured in the game. Importantly, they continue to compensate these artists, providing royalties for creatures generated using their artistic contributions. This ethical commitment positions the studio as pro-artist, pro-player, and pro-human, reflecting their philosophy outlined in a recent blog post.
Addressing the Gaming Community’s Concerns about AI
In light of the negative perceptions toward AI in gaming—exemplified by the recent controversy surrounding Larian’s upcoming title, Divinity—Studio Atelico’s co-founder and CEO, Piero Molino, faced pressing questions during a recent interview. He acknowledged the rising tide of ant-AI sentiment among gamers but contended that the opposition is less about AI technology itself and more about “slop”and the exploitation of human creativity.
Molino explained, “I comprehend this perspective for a couple of reasons. Many tech companies are leveraging AI without adequately compensating the artists whose works serve as training materials for image generators. Therefore, it’s understandable why there is backlash. Our approach diverges from this norm; we prioritize paying artists and providing them with royalties for assets utilized in-game.”He emphasized their commitment to ethical practices, stating: “What players oppose is not the technology itself but rather the exploitation of human talent and subpar quality.”
Future Developments and Game Mechanics
Looking ahead, Molino noted that a minimal aspect of the AI engine would initially operate in the cloud. However, this dependency will decrease as the technology matures, with an ultimate goal to shift everything onto users’ devices. The expense associated with creature creation is anticipated to remain minimal, at less than one cent per creature, facilitating broader adoption of AI technology across the gaming industry.
As for gameplay, Bobium Brawlers will feature fast-paced 1v1 battles that combine card mechanics with dice-rolling excitement. Players will be encouraged to employ strategic combos and tactical creativity instead of merely grinding for victories or adhering to a dominating meta.
