Resolution in Epic Games’ Dispute with Google: A New Era for Developers
The ongoing struggle between Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, and major platform holders has reached a significant resolution. Following a lengthy conflict with Apple and Google over the distribution of games and apps, Sweeney’s efforts have led to a fruitful outcome regarding Fortnite. This popular title, previously removed from iOS and Android platforms, is now set to return to the Google Play Store.
Fortnite’s Return and New Distribution Model
After successfully launching a mobile version of the Epic Games Store globally in early 2024, Fortnite is not just back on mobile platforms; it will now also be available for direct download from the Google Play Store. This marks a crucial shift in Epic’s strategy, allowing users easier access to their favorite game since its prior removal from these platforms.
Changes in Google’s Policy: Competing Options and Lower Fees
This resolution comes with significant policy revisions from Google. They will now permit competing app stores and allow alternative payment methods, creating a more conducive environment for developers. Furthermore, Google plans to reduce its fees for those who opt to use the Google Play Store’s billing system, thus enhancing the economic landscape for mobile developers.
Fortnite will return to Google Play Store worldwide soon. Epic Games Store continues supporting Android worldwide alongside Windows and Mac, and installation on Android will become much easier later in 2026.

Google’s Vision for a Flexible Developer Ecosystem
In a recent blog post, Sameer Samat, president of the Android ecosystem, expressed the intent to enhance the development landscape further. He stated, “We aspire to lead in how developers distribute their apps to users across various devices. A modern platform must prioritize flexibility, offering choice, openness, and a secure experience for all.”This initiative aims at achieving these goals through three primary avenues:
- Introduction of multiple billing options.
- A program for registered app stores.
- Reduction of fees along with new developer programs.
Timeline for Implementation
These updates will be rolled out worldwide by September 30, 2027, with an initial focus on the EEA, the United Kingdom, and the United States by June 30, 2026. Following that, Australia will see these changes by September 30, 2026, and Korea and Japan by December 31, 2026. Other regions will have to wait until September 2027 for these developments.
Final Thoughts on the Future of Gaming on Android
While a specific date for Fortnite’s return to the Google Play Store remains unspecified, Sweeney has affirmed that it would happen “soon.”Samat concluded that these adjustments are expected to build a robust Android ecosystem, promoting successful developers and enhancing the quality of apps and games for users.
As the digital landscape continues to evolve, the collaboration between developers and platforms like Google is vital for fostering innovation, ensuring a superior experience for end-users.
