Electronic Arts (EA) and Full Circle have officially announced a highly anticipated collaboration with Nike SB for their skating game, Skate. As part of this initiative, the Isle of Grom skatepark has received a complete Nike-themed makeover, culminating in the debut of a night mode. Players can immerse themselves in this Nike-centric experience from April 14 to May 5. During this event, access to the Isle of Grom will be available to all players; however, after this period, it will revert to a paywall system, requiring either a daily pass or a premium Skate pass for continued access.

Community Response and Paywall Controversy

The decision to institute a paywall for Isle of Grom has been met with mixed emotions following its return in Season 3 last month. Just a week after the studio experienced layoffs, Full Circle’s reversal on their previous promise to keep the map accessible to everyone stirred discontent among fans.

“We know there would be no Skate without our community, and we’re dedicated to listening and adjusting wherever and whenever we can, ” stated Deran Chung, Senior Creative Director at Full Circle, during a presentation I attended. He acknowledged the community’s feedback, saying, “A few weeks ago, we announced the return to the Isle of Grom, and early access through the Skate premium pass. We knew it wasn’t going to be the most popular decision, and yeah, there were a lot of strong feelings shared about it, and we get it.”

The Future of Skate and Community Sentiment

Chung addressed the polarizing paywall decision upfront, recognizing that no amount of explanation might ease community frustrations. Nevertheless, he noted a shift in sentiment following the launch of Season 3, as players began experiencing the exciting updates that included new moves like dark slides and Skate Paddy’s.“While we may not be able to deliver everything the way you want right away, we are paying attention and doing our best to create a great Skate experience now and for the years to come, ” he added.

Despite lingering discontent regarding the paywall, many players seem to have found value in Grom, with some considering it worth the price of entry. Others maintain a desire for a different packaging of the experience, reflecting the community’s divided views.

Upcoming Changes and Community Engagement

The reversal of Full Circle’s promise is disappointing, but it comes amidst impending changes at EA due to its acquisition by the Saudi Arabia PIF. This could be just the tip of the iceberg concerning potential shifts the company will undergo in the coming year.

Focusing on the current gameplay, the new version of Isle of Grom has received positive feedback. As an occasional player, I found joy in the upgraded environment, particularly at night, where I could spend hours attempting ambitious stunts under the moonlight.

While I personally might not invest in Nike apparel for my character, it’s clear that many players are excited about these offerings. The new challenges associated with the Nike SB event are a welcome addition, appealing even to those who typically enjoy just skating for fun. The classic Nike SB Dunk High, particularly the iconic white and red version, is earnable through gameplay rather than locked behind a paywall, providing players with a meaningful incentive.

Looking Ahead: What’s Next for Skate?

As the game progresses, further collaborations can be expected, potentially leading to additional content being gated behind paywalls. It wouldn’t be surprising to see new areas offered exclusively to premium pass holders as the game nears its full launch. Since players are already engaging with the notion of paying for access to content, this could shape the future direction of Skate, as Chung emphasized sustainability within the game’s development.

If I had a choice, I would prefer that Full Circle focus on monetizing cosmetic items rather than core gameplay areas. Paying for game features that enhance enjoyment feels less appealing compared to simply buying cosmetic upgrades. Yet, it’s clear that this paywall decision has become a point of contention within the community, resulting in an unfortunate scenario where players may have to pay for both essential and aesthetic elements of their gaming experience.
