The Challenges of Battling the Matriarchs in ARC Raiders
Embarking on your adventure in ARC Raiders can be quite daunting, especially when new Raiders encounter fearsome ARCs like the Rocketeers and Bastion. Players quickly realize that these formidable machines are just the beginning, as they prepare to face even greater threats—the enigmatic Matriarchs.
Understanding the Matriarchs
The Matriarchs stand out as the game’s closest approximation to a boss fight, presenting a level of challenge that is not easily overcome. Individual players will find it nearly impossible to defeat these colossal machines without substantial luck and skill. In terms of PvE encounters, they are among the deadliest adversaries in ARC Raiders. Nevertheless, players have discovered strategies that allow them to tackle these behemoths, particularly when cooperating in larger groups.
Developer Insights: Intent vs. Reality
Despite the players’ success, Embark Studios has indicated that the Matriarch encounters are designed to be tougher than what many players experience, especially for newcomers. According to the studio, the expectation was for Raiders to encounter an arduous challenge, particularly while equipped with mid-tier gear. As design director Virgil Watkins noted in an interview with PC Gamer, the design philosophy did not account for the efficiency of player abilities at lower levels.
“Even though [Queens and Matriarchs are] huge and deadly, they’re not intended for the full server to go up against and get equally rewarded. It is meant to be, you know, a couple of dedicated squads, maybe working together while also dealing with other players, ”Watkins said.“That’s definitely on us to an extent…I think we gave players too effective abilities to take down these things too early. So they were tuned more for what I would call mid-game gear.”
Future Adjustments and Evolving Gameplay
While players may speculate on future updates that could strengthen the Matriarchs and Queens, Embark is considering a more holistic approach. The developers are keen to rethink their strategies based on diverse playstyles exhibited by Raiders.
Watkins highlights these considerations, pondering, “Do we reward the people who might pick their moment well, and go get some scraps from part of the fight and then sneak away?…Are you going to be the guy who capitalizes at the end of the fight because everyone’s worn down and out of ammo, or are you the one who’s trying to pull everyone together and have the fight on even terms?”
Enhancing Player Engagement
Embark is also focused on refining other game elements, such as the Hidden Bunker and Locked Gate activities. Observations show that players often wait passively at locations instead of actively seeking keys to complete challenges. According to Watkins, “When we built them, we had an idealized way we hoped people would engage. And then, you know, as players always do, they find this sort of meta throughline.”
He further emphasizes the studio’s commitment to maintaining the essence of these challenges while improving mechanics to encourage more active participation from players.
Expect Exciting Changes Ahead
As one of the many players logging into ARC Raiders daily, anticipate upcoming updates that promise to revitalize the gaming experience, leaning towards a steeper challenge. It is crucial for Embark to balance difficulty with enjoyment to ensure player retention and satisfaction.
Additionally, if you’ve exploited the coin duplication glitch, be prepared for possible repercussions, including suspensions in the future.
