Recent analyses suggest that the anticipated Steam Machine, designed to deliver a 4K@60 FPS experience, will significantly depend on AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) along with running on lower graphical settings.
A YouTuber known as The Phawx set out to create a prototype Steam Machine using readily available components. This DIY rig was constructed to closely mirror the specifications of the forthcoming gaming system, incorporating the following hardware:
- AMD Ryzen 7 8840U CPU: This unit features 2 cores with 4 threads disabled, and its clock speed has been intentionally reduced.
- Radeon RX 7600M XT GPU: A robust graphics card integrated into the setup.
- AMD Smart Memory Access: This technology was utilized to effectively link the CPU and GPU, similar to the anticipated Steam Machine configuration.
The custom-built system aimed to validate claims regarding the Steam Machine’s performance capabilities, specifically asserting that it operates at six times the efficiency of the Steam Deck while providing 4K resolution at 60 FPS, facilitated by AMD FSR.
Performance Analysis Confirms Speed Advantage
Testing conducted by The Phawx confirmed the assertion that the Steam Machine can achieve speeds six times faster than the Steam Deck. In certain GPU-intensive scenarios, the makeshift setup even exceeded this claim, clocking in at approximately 6.5 times the performance. This noteworthy improvement can be attributed to the GPU’s superior specifications, including a higher compute unit (CU) count, which also enhances ray tracing abilities.
Challenges in Achieving 4K@60 FPS
On the other hand, the claim regarding the Steam Machine’s capacity to maintain a steady 4K@60 FPS performance using AMD FSR appears to be more contentious based on initial testing outcomes. The only title that managed to deliver a seamless 4K resolution alongside 60 FPS was God of War Ragnarok, which utilized Intel’s XeSS technology in Ultra Performance mode while operating on low graphics settings.
Other games, including Warhammer 40K: Space Marines 2, Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales, Starfield, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, yielded inconsistent performance metrics. None achieved the targeted 4K output at 60 FPS even when employing upscalers in Ultra Performance mode and operating on low settings. Titles like Starfield may necessitate a frame rate cap of 30 FPS to provide a playability baseline.
Though it appears that the Steam Machine may not rival high-end systems in delivering the pristine 4K@60 FPS experience, Valve asserts that it will still greatly enhance gaming experiences for many users compared to current systems. The inclusion of 8 GB of VRAM may pose limitations; however, if its pricing aligns with Valve’s competitive claims, the Steam Machine has the potential to leave a notable mark on the gaming market, reminiscent of how the Steam Deck transformed handheld gaming at its launch.
