EA’s Embrace of AI: A Double-Edged Sword
Electronic Arts (EA) is actively encouraging its workforce to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) across various tasks; however, this initiative is leading to complications that burden developers with additional work.
According to a recent report from Business Insider, employees have revealed that EA’s leadership has been pressing its 15, 000-strong team to utilize AI for almost every aspect of their roles. This ranges from generating game code and concept art to providing management guidance on sensitive issues such as employee compensation and promotions.
The Challenges of AI-Generated Code
A significant concern arises from AI tools employed in coding tasks. These automated systems frequently produce subpar code that necessitates extensive manual correction. Furthermore, developers express discontent about the expectation to train AI software using their own work, which could diminish the need for traditional roles like concept artists and level designers.
Impacts on Quality Assurance and Employment
The rampant use of AI may also jeopardize roles in Quality Assurance (QA).A former employee from Respawn, one of EA’s premier studios, shared their experience of being laid off this past Spring, alongside approximately 100 colleagues. Their positions were replaced by AI systems tasked with reviewing and summarizing feedback from play testers—responsibilities that were once handled by humans.
Varied Perspectives on AI in Game Development
Despite the potential job threats posed by excessive reliance on AI, not all developers view its implementation unfavorably. Notably, Masahiro Sakurai, the visionary behind the Super Smash Bros.franchise, advocates for the use of generative AI as a means to enhance efficiency and ensure sustainable large-scale development, particularly in Japan, where the talent pool is rapidly diminishing. Similarly, Hideo Kojima, the mastermind behind the Metal Gear and Death Stranding series, acknowledges the advantages of generative AI, seeing it as a tool that allows him to concentrate on the creative aspects of game production.
