ASUS Germany Launches Website Without Desktops and Laptops; Acer Still Unavailable

After enduring several days of downtime, ASUS.de has successfully resumed operations, in stark contrast to Acer, whose German website remains offline.

ASUS.de Restores Service; Acer.de Still Down – Product Listings Altered Due to Munich Court Ruling

Both ASUS and Acer are currently embroiled in a patent licensing dispute with Nokia concerning the HEVC/H.265 video codec. Following a ruling by the Munich I Regional Court, the two companies have been instructed to cease direct sales of certain desktop computers and laptops within Germany. The court determined that neither ASUS nor Acer had reached an agreement on Fair, Reasonable, and Non-Discriminatory (FRAND) licensing conditions, which are essential for the use of the HEVC standard.

As a result of this legal action, Nokia was granted an injunction, effectively suspending the sale of specific desktop and laptop models in Germany. While ASUS and Acer continue to sell these products elsewhere globally, their German regional websites were taken offline following the court’s decision. Although both companies are actively seeking a resolution, their web outage posed significant challenges for users in the area.

Numerous users have reported difficulties accessing even non-regional ASUS and Acer websites, which further hindered their ability to download drivers and software for their devices. Fortunately, ASUS has now reinstated access to its German website, allowing users to retrieve downloadable files and browse available products. However, it is important to note that the current listings exclude any desktop or laptop offerings due to the ongoing legal dispute, although peripherals remain available.

In contrast, Acer‘s regional website still displays a “maintenance work”notice and is inaccessible. This prolonged downtime is puzzling, especially when eliminating the desktop and laptop catalogs could have streamlined access for its customers. Nevertheless, users eager to purchase Acer products can still find them available through various third-party retailers, even those previously barred from the site by the court’s injunction.
