Cha Eun Woo’s Tax Evasion Allegations: A Deep Dive
Cha Eun Woo, a member of the popular group Astro and a well-known actor, has come under scrutiny from South Korea’s National Tax Service (NTS) for alleged income tax evasion. In a significant development, the NTS has issued a tax assessment that surpasses 20 billion won (approximately $13.6 million), linking the matter to a company owned by his family.
Investigation Findings
The inquiry, conducted by the Seoul Regional Tax Office, focused on the income structure of Cha Eun Woo before his enlistment for mandatory military service in July 2025. Reports indicate that authorities found a family-run enterprise, dubbed “Company A, ”which acted as an intermediary between Cha Eun Woo, his management agency, Fantagio, and the actor himself.
Tax Structure and Allegations
As per the reported structure, Cha Eun Woo’s income was split among three entities: his management agency Fantagio, Company A, and Cha Eun Woo individually. The NTS determined that Company A functioned as a “paper company”without any legitimate business activities, according to a report from allkpop.
Officials asserted that this setup was designed to manipulate tax obligations, allowing Cha Eun Woo to pay a reduced corporate tax rate of around 20% instead of the higher 45% personal income tax. Evidence presented from the company’s registered address in Incheon, particularly its location on Ganghwa Island, suggested the absence of legitimate entertainment operations. Investigators pointed out that while numerous luxury vehicles and various operational expenses were documented, Company A did not offer services that differentiated it from Fantagio.
Consequences and Agency’s Response
After conducting interviews with both Cha Eun Woo and his mother, the NTS concluded that the profits generated through Company A were ultimately channeled back to Cha Eun Woo, resulting in the substantial unpaid taxes. This development marks one of the most significant tax penalties imposed on any Korean celebrity, as reported by chosun.
Moreover, the investigation extended to Cha Eun Woo’s agency, Fantagio, which received an additional tax liability of 8.2 billion won (about $5.6 million) in August 2025 for allegedly utilizing false tax invoices from Company A.
Ongoing Developments
In response to these allegations, Fantagio has publicly disputed the findings. In a statement released on January 22, they underscored that no final resolution has been reached and expressed intentions to address the matter through legal channels, reiterating that Company A is properly registered as an entertainment entity and not a mere façade.
Cha Eun Woo’s legal team has initiated a pre-assessment review appeal against the decisions rendered by the National Tax Service and is currently awaiting the outcome. At present, the actor is fulfilling his compulsory military duties, which began in July 2025 and are scheduled to conclude in January 2027, according to mb.
