ASTRO’s Cha Eun Woo Faces Tax Evasion Allegations, Engages Law Firm Linked to NewJeans Contract Dispute

Cha Eun Woo Under Investigation for Alleged Tax Evasion

Renowned South Korean actor and ASTRO member, Cha Eun Woo, is facing serious allegations related to tax evasion, with claims exceeding 20 billion won (approximately $13.6 million). The situation escalated when the National Tax Service (NTS) issued a notice for additional income tax in January 2026.

Background of the Allegations

The focus of the investigation centers on a company that was set up by Cha’s mother in October 2022. Authorities suspect that this entity was utilized as a shell company to minimize Cha’s tax liabilities. Reports indicate that his substantial entertainment income was distributed across three different entities: Cha’s management agency, Fantagio, the company registered under his mother’s name, and Cha himself. This strategic splitting of income seemingly allowed him to evade the highest personal income tax rate of 45% applicable in South Korea, benefiting instead from lower corporate tax rates, as reported by Chosun.

Investigation by the “Chaebol Grim Reaper”

The Seoul Regional National Tax Service Investigation Division, informally dubbed the “chaebol grim reaper, ”initiated an extensive investigation into the circumstances in the first half of 2025, shortly before Cha enlisted in military service in July 2025. The inquiry originally began with a probe into Fantagio’s financial dealings, ultimately resulting in the agency being ordered to pay an additional 8.2 billion won in taxes by August 2025.

Response from Cha Eun Woo’s Agency

In response to these allegations, Fantagio issued a statement acknowledging the core issue: the legitimacy of the company established by Cha’s mother as a taxpayer. The agency reiterated that Cha and his tax representatives are fully committed to cooperating with investigative authorities. They highlighted that, as of now, nothing has been formally confirmed or officially communicated regarding the allegations, according to information from Korea Times.

Legal Representation and Potential Outcomes

In preparation for contesting the tax assessment, Cha has secured the legal services of Sejong, a prominent law firm previously involved in representing NewJeans during their contract termination dispute with ADOR in 2025. That case revolved around claims of a broken trust between the group and their agency, but it ultimately resulted in a court ruling against NewJeans. Sejong’s expertise could prove crucial in navigating the complexities of Cha’s situation.

Additionally, Cha’s agency has also enlisted the help of Yulchon law firm for related legal matters. Experts note that the classification of the case will significantly affect its outcome. If prosecutors can demonstrate intentional tax evasion, Cha may face criminal charges. Conversely, if the actions are categorized as tax avoidance, this would likely be handled as a civil matter.

Current Status and Future Implications

Since commencing his military service with the military band, Cha Eun Woo has refrained from making any public comments regarding these allegations, as reported by Koreaboo. Given the high-profile nature of this case and its implications for both Cha and the broader entertainment industry, the developments will be closely monitored by fans and industry stakeholders alike.
