Apple M5 Pro Chip’s New Performance Cores Surpass Intel Panther Lake Chip Competitors

Apple’s silicon technology has reached a significant milestone, evident in the remarkable performance of the new M5 Pro chips. For those who may still doubt the advancements, the M5 Pro’s performance cores are now competing directly with Intel’s Panther Lake chips, all while consuming considerably less power.

Apple M5 Pro Chips: Blending Performance and Efficiency

To provide some context, Apple has launched a revolutionary fusion architecture with its M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. This design is built on chiplets and utilizes TSMC’s SoIC 3D packaging technique, which allows for the integration of various components—such as the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine—into a single compact package. This innovative approach offers an unparalleled degree of flexibility due to the multitude of die configurations it facilitates.

The M5 Pro and M5 Max chips also introduce advanced Super cores and the new Performance cores, or P-cores, effectively replacing the former Efficiency cores. It’s crucial to understand that these new Performance cores come with a completely reimagined microarchitecture, setting them apart from their predecessors.

This discussion leads us to the crucial aspect of today’s analysis: the SPEC integer rate benchmark, which provides a comprehensive assessment of a computer’s performance over time under varying integer workloads.

Recent results from a SPEC integer rate test conducted by jht5132 indicate that the M5 Pro’s Performance core achieved results comparable to Intel’s Panther Lake P-core, all while operating at a mere 2.5W power consumption (clocked at 4.38GHz).This achievement is particularly remarkable, as the Performance core in the M5 Pro/Max delivers around 70% of the Super core’s performance, underscoring the efficiency and power of Apple’s latest silicon.
