Apple has accelerated its update cycle, unveiling the initial developer beta versions of several operating systems—including iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, watchOS 26.4, tvOS 26.4, visionOS 26.4, HomePod Software 26.4, and macOS Tahoe 26.4—about a week earlier than anticipated.

Among the most notable innovations in iOS 26.4 beta 1 is the enhanced support for video podcasts within the Apple Podcasts app. This update promises users a streamlined experience, allowing them to switch effortlessly between video and audio formats. Moreover, the update includes functionality for dynamic video advertisements.
While video podcast capabilities are not entirely new to Apple, this version introduces HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) technology, ensuring that users can enjoy video content without sacrificing audio quality. This adaptive streaming method automatically fine-tunes the viewing experience based on network performance, in addition to enabling offline downloads for video podcasts.
In another key development, iOS 26.4 beta 1 initiates a preliminary trial of end-to-end (E2E) encryption for Rich Communication Services (RCS) messages. For context, RCS allows users of both iPhone and Android devices to exchange high-resolution media and also introduces typing indicators, read receipts, and refined group chat options—such as naming groups and managing members.
This beta offers a toggle feature within the Settings app to enable or disable E2E encryption for RCS messages, with this option activated by default. Currently, this E2E protection is exclusive to communications between iPhone users, serving as an alternative for those not utilizing iMessages. When messaging someone with E2E encryption enabled, a lock icon will appear in the chat interface.
Additionally, iOS 26.4 has automatically activated the Stolen Device Protection feature, which mandates authentication via Face ID or Touch ID to access specific sensitive functionalities, such as the Passwords app, the Lost mode in the Find My app, and purchasing on Safari.
Aesthetically, significant transformations have been made to the Music app in iOS 26.4. It now features a full-screen design for albums and playlists, where the track listings are complemented by background colors that harmonize with album artwork. Users can also conveniently find nearby concerts directly within the Music app.
Lastly, the Wallpaper Gallery app has undergone redesign, introducing new categories while benefiting from performance enhancements to improve its responsiveness and fluidity.
Additional Updates
As indicated earlier, developer beta versions are also being launched for iPadOS 26.4, watchOS 26.4, tvOS 26.4, visionOS 26.4, HomePod Software 26.4, and macOS Tahoe 26.4.
