Apple Experiences Talent Drain with Departure of Senior Exec Overseeing Siri and Four AI Researchers

Apple’s struggle to retain its top AI talent is becoming increasingly pronounced, as evidenced by a recent wave of high-profile exits.

Recent Departures: Key Figures in Apple’s AI and Siri Teams

According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple has recently seen the departure of Stuart Bowers, a prominent executive closely involved with Siri, who has joined Google’s DeepMind. He was a pivotal figure within the company, directly reporting to Mike Rockwell, head of Siri.

In addition to Bowers, four AI researchers—Yinfei Yang, Haoxuan You, Bailin Wang, and Zirui Wang—have also departed, further compounding the company’s AI talent drain.

This trend follows a significant reshuffling in December 2025, during which Apple lost several high-ranking executives. Notably, AI leader John Giannandrea was ousted, subsequently replaced by Microsoft’s Amar Subramanya.

Moreover, the head of UI design, Alan Dye, was recently recruited by Meta, signaling continued attrition at the executive level. Furthermore, Apple announced that its general counsel, Kat Adams, and Lisa Jackson, vice president for Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives, would also be leaving the company in the near future, as reported in official Apple news.

The situation is exacerbated by the fact that Apple’s design team is losing talent to Jony Ive’s new venture, io, recently acquired by OpenAI for its ambitious “iPhone Killer”project. Gurman reports that OpenAI has onboarded around 40 engineers from Apple just in the past month. Notable hires include manufacturing design expert Matt Theobald and Cyrus Daniel Irani, who previously led human interface design.

Furthermore, Abidur Chowdhury, the designer behind the iPhone Air and a rising star within Apple, has departed to explore opportunities at an unspecified AI startup, amplifying concerns over Apple’s talent retention.

Bowers’ exit is particularly significant, as he is expected to contribute to Google’s Gemini AI models, which are set to enhance Siri in the coming months—potentially giving Google an edge in the competitive AI landscape.
