Creating Your Own Portable Windows Environment

  1. Select the Windows To Go USB option on the first screen.
  2. In the Select installation source dropdown, choose Current Windows OS.
  3. Your destination drive will automatically populate. If it doesn’t, manually select your USB drive from the Select destination drive dropdown.
  4. Choose the appropriate Partition scheme—using GPT for UEFI ensures compatibility with most modern systems.
  5. Select the ideal Installation mode: Legacy for external SSDs and VHD/VHDX for USB flash drives.
  6. Click Proceed to begin.

Before cloning begins, WinToUSB will prompt you to format the chosen partition on your USB drive. Ideally, it should contain a single, large partition; if not, you’ll need to manage and merge existing partitions prior to using WinToUSB.

Once you’ve confirmed your partition settings, click OK to initiate the cloning process. Depending on the speed of your USB drive and system configuration, this may take some time.

After cloning, boot from the USB by accessing the BIOS on the computer where you intend to use it. On Windows 10/11 PCs, you can enter the BIOS via Recovery settings in the Windows Settings app or by pressing a specific key during boot (this varies by manufacturer, so a quick search can help find the correct one).

Driver installation will occur automatically, although you can pre-install them by choosing the correct driver folder before cloning. However, managing drivers can be convoluted, so it’s generally advisable to leave this to WinToUSB.

Finally, consider enabling BitLocker encryption on your drive. This adds an essential layer of security; in case you misplaced your drive, BitLocker prevents unauthorized access to your files and personal data. Note that BitLocker is not available in the free version of WinToUSB, requiring an upgrade to either the Professional or Enterprise editions at $29.95 and $299.95, respectively.
