Clay Travis warns Caleb Williams of potential Colin Kaepernick-like NFL backlash over viral pink nails and phone case
Clay Travis recently commented on Caleb Williams’ choice to sport pink nails and carry a pink phone case, drawing comparisons to Colin Kaepernick. The sports commentator argued that Williams may be inviting criticism by bringing attention to himself before even entering the league. Travis stated,
“I do think Caleb Williams is making himself a bigger target. By, in effectively the interview era, drawing attention to himself by the choices that he is making that have nothing to do with football.”
The commentator further suggested that if Colin Kaepernick had been a standout quarterback, his activism would have been overlooked. However, due to his lack of exceptional performance, it was used against him. Travis made a similar point, stating that Caleb Williams must play exceptionally well from the start to avoid facing a similar situation. He elaborated by saying,
“Let’s say things don’t go well. If he comes out and he plays phenomenal. As long as he stays roughly out of trouble, the NFL makes huge excuses for him. I’ve always said if Colin Kaepernick had been an incredible quarterback, he could do whatever he wanted off the field. The NFL would have made excuses for him. He could have protested anything.”
Caleb Williams garners support from multiple sources, while Clay Travis draws Kaepernick comparison
Despite Clay Travis’ disapproval and tendency to unfavorably compare the upcoming NFL rookie to Colin Kaepernick, not everyone in the league shares his reaction. Some have come to the rookie’s defense, stating that as long as he can perform on the field, his personal beliefs should not matter. For instance, Robert Griffin III expressed his support for the rookie on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Let Caleb Williams be Caleb Williams. Ain’t nothing wrong with him wearing pink fingernail polish and having a pink phone case. Quite frankly, if he goes to Chicago then Bears’ fans should be rocking whatever he is. Stop the hate and accept him for who he is.”
In the midst of the controversy, the USC quarterback personally responded by firing back to assert,
“Wallet’s white, phone is pink, case is clear, nails are clear, lips are pink, your girl would love ’em!”
Despite probably never wanting to be involved in the controversy, the presumptive first overall pick has found himself in a situation where Clay Travis has compared him to Colin Kaepernick. However, he is not backing down and is making it clear that he will not back down.
