Rumors have intensified regarding a potential ThunderCats film featuring Henry Cavill, slated for release in 2025. However, for devoted fans of the franchise, it’s important to clarify that these claims currently lack any credible support. As a widely recognized media franchise, ThunderCats encompasses three animated series, two video games, comics, board games, and a plethora of action figures. It originally premiered alongside a toy line in 1985 and enjoyed a successful four-season run. The series witnessed two reboots in 2011 and again in 2020, the latter being named ThunderCats Roar.
Debunking the Live-Action Movie Rumor
No Confirmation of Henry Cavill’s Involvement

Despite the ongoing speculation surrounding a live-action adaptation of ThunderCats, the absence of reputable sources validating these rumors raises significant doubts. It is unusual for a high-profile film project starring a known actor like Henry Cavill to develop unnoticed in the industry. The reported 2025 release date adds to the skepticism, as such a major project typically necessitates ample marketing and promotional efforts.
Speculation Fueled by Fan-Made Trailer
AI-Generated Concept Trailer Sparks Interest

The surge in rumors can be traced back to a fan-created trailer by @stryderHD on YouTube. This AI-generated concept trailer featured fan casting of ThunderCats characters, leading some to believe it was an official project. Titled “THUNDERCATS – Teaser Trailer (2025) Henry Cavill, Alexandra Daddario | Live Action Concept,”the title may mislead viewers unfamiliar with how projects are usually announced. Given Cavill’s reputation for portraying strong characters, it is easy to see why many speculate his involvement as Lion-O.
The trailer also includes a variety of well-known actors such as Liam Neeson, Alexandra Daddario, Sebastian Stan, Terry Crews, and Jason Momoa, among others. However, fan-made trailers often overlook practical considerations; not every cast member can be an A-lister, or production costs would spiral. The evident use of AI art further signals its unofficial status. Moreover, it’s generally understood that a teaser is not the first medium to reveal a film; rather, it serves as the finale of months, if not years, of promotion.
Current Development Status of ThunderCats Film
Adam Wingard in Charge of Script Development

For those clinging to the hope of a ThunderCats film, there is still a flicker of excitement. Adam Wingard reportedly remains committed to developing a live-action ThunderCats project, albeit on a timeline yet to be determined. The latest update emerged in March 2024, with Wingard sharing insights during an interview with Gizmodo, stating:
“Simon [Barrett] and I are still actively working on the script. We finished our last draft basically right when I was going into production on this movie [Godzilla x Kong] and we just had to put everything on hold. [But] right now we’re actively working on it again. So whether that means that’s the next thing I do or [not], I’m not sure. But it’s definitely one of the top priorities I have right now in terms of working on a script.”
While the nature of Wingard’s ThunderCats—whether it will be live-action or animated—remains unconfirmed, he emphasized in another interview (via Collider) the necessity of maintaining a serious tone for the adaptation:
“You gotta take it seriously. In the cartoon, even though it was definitely for kids, the characters were in a fair amount of danger.”
This acknowledgment of the original series suggests that a live-action adaptation would honor the depth and stakes present in the ThunderCats narrative.
