In the realm of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, few foes pose a greater threat than the Chromatic Aberration. This formidable boss is not easily vanquished, requiring not just skill but also comprehensive preparation to stand a chance against it.
The battle against the Chromatic Aberration demands you to be significantly over-leveled and armed with powerful weapons. Going in with gear under level 25 is a sure way to invite defeat. Hence, accumulating Grandiose Chroma Catalyst is crucial for your success.
Adding to the challenge, this boss possesses no vulnerabilities to exploit. Therefore, relying on specific elemental weapons or skills won’t yield much advantage during the encounter.
However, a path to victory exists. With proper preparations, you can conquer the Chromatic Aberration. This guide will serve as your roadmap to triumph.
Where to Locate the Chromatic Aberration?
The Chromatic Aberration resides on a floating island, located northwest of Dark Shores. Accessing this area requires you to obtain Esquie’s Fly ability, which becomes available upon completing Act 2 of the game.
Starting your journey from Dark Shores, a resourceful location for farming experience, you will need to ascend into the skies. Follow the map to the designated site.
Once you land on the island, inspect your party configuration. Adjust your weapons, Luminas, and Pictos as necessary before initiating the battle. When you feel prepared, engage the Chromatic Aberration either by approaching it or launching an attack.
Preparing for the Chromatic Aberration Battle

As previously mentioned, the Chromatic Aberration has no weaknesses and notably resists Dark attacks. Consequently, ensure you avoid incorporating Dark skills or weapons in your strategy.
Your party members should be at least level 80 to equip them for this encounter effectively. Enhancing characters’ Vitality and Defense through respec or upgrades is also advisable. The boss possesses devastating multi-hit combos, and having characters equipped to withstand 2–3 hits will be essential for survival.
For those facing level challenges, a reliable method to farm XP is by defeating Noirs located in Dark Shores. Defeating a duo of enemies can yield between 590K to 780K XP, depending on hits received, while a trio can drop over 800K XP.
These encounters not only generate experience but also provide valuable Grandiose Chroma Catalyst and occasionally Recoat items.
If your weapon levels are below 19, consider farming Resplendent Chroma Catalyst from Contorsionniste enemies found near the Visages at the Sadness Vale Fast Travel point.
Lastly, ensure that every party member is equipped with effective Luminas, as this will enhance your performance in the fight.
Optimal Party Composition

For a successful encounter against the Chromatic Aberration, my team included Lune, Maelle, and Verso, all over level 84. This combination allows Verso to dish out strong Fire or Light damage while Lune and Maelle can contribute to inflicting burns.
It’s also wise to level up your reserve members. In my case, Sciel and Monoco also stood at level 84 and could be invaluable should you need to rotate characters during battle.
Starting with Lune, essential skills like Hell, Wildfire, and Mayhem should be emphasized. With the abundance of chain attacks from the boss, her skill Hell will be utilized frequently. Don’t forget Healing Light for support, especially if Anti-Blight is not part of your roster.
For Maelle, prioritize skills such as Pyrolyse, Rain of Fire, and Swift Stride to maximize burn applications and to maintain an advantageous stance. The same goes for Verso, who should leverage skills like Phantom Stars, Strike Storm, and Assault Zero for effective damage output.

Strategies for Defeating the Chromatic Aberration

Your primary objective in this battle is to parry the Chromatic Aberration’s strikes effectively and accumulate Action Points (AP) for unleashing your most powerful attacks.
The fight does not follow a fixed initiation pattern, but expect it to frequently commence with the 7-Hit Light Combo or 2-Hit Light Slashes. It often buffers itself through the Powerful move or follows with a 6-Hit Dark Combo thereafter.
The Gradient Earthquake and Sweep Attacks are the most manageable moves to work with. Aim to dodge all other moves initially until mastering the timing of their attacks.
Once you’ve honed your parrying skills, utilize them for counterattacks strategically. If a character accumulates 9 AP and suffers damage, react promptly by dodging to safeguard against further hits that turn.
Given the Chromatic Aberration’s heightened turn frequency, you will likely accrue ample AP to unleash powerful moves. Focus on using high-damage skills such as Strike Storm, Phantom Stars, Hell, Pyrolyse, and Rain of Fire whenever available. Don’t forget the Cheater skill, obtainable from defeating the superboss, Sprong.
Utilizing these high-impact moves effectively will help you chip away at the boss’s health. Expect the match to be lengthy, requiring consistent use of powerful attacks combined with timely parrying. Remain steadfast until the Chromatic Aberration falls.
