In the expansive world of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, players encounter numerous optional bosses that offer significant experience points and valuable items. One of these formidable foes is the Chromatic Bruler, which can be found during your early adventures in Act 1.
This boss, a Nevron adorned with a colossal anchor, is known for its fierce attacks that can deal lethal damage, especially if confronted prematurely. Thankfully, the Chromatic Bruler has a predictable attack pattern, making it manageable for players who have honed their skills. Below, we provide detailed strategies for defeating this formidable enemy.
Where to Locate the Chromatic Bruler

To find the Chromatic Bruler, head north of Gestral Village. From the entrance of the Ancient Sanctuary, positioned near the Flying Waters, take a left and navigate through the patches of red grass. Continue straight ahead, and you should soon see the boss lurking in the distance. Approach and engage the Chromatic Bruler when you’re ready.
Preparing for the Chromatic Bruler Encounter

The Chromatic Bruler is vulnerable to all elemental damage types. Therefore, arm yourself with any weapons or skills that deal Fire, Ice, Earth, Lightning, Light, or Dark damage for an advantage. If you choose to face this boss early in the game, be sure to improve your parrying skills, as its attacks can inflict between 381–466 HP damage per hit.
Here’s a guide on the most effective party members, recommended skills, and a breakdown of the Chromatic Bruler’s attacks:
Optimal Party Members

After tackling this enemy during Act 2, I utilized a party comprising Verso, Maelle, and Lune, all at level 19. If you’re struggling with parry timing, consider leveling up further or selecting characters with higher HP.
Verso: Initially, I used his default equipped weapon and skills Assault Zero
and From Fire
. However, I recommend upgrading his skills and switching his weapon to one aligned with the Light element for maximum effectiveness.
Maelle: Equipped with her selected weapon and skills like Degagement
, Spark
, and Rain of Fire
, she proved instrumental. Additionally, Lune brings vital elemental advantages with her vast knowledge of skills. Her default weapon offers fire damage, but switching to one that delivers lightning damage can be beneficial against the Chromatic Bruler.
For supplementary party options, Sciel can replace Maelle as she possesses strong Dark damage skills that can be valuable during the encounter.

Chromatic Bruler Attack Overview

The Chromatic Bruler has two main attacks, both of which are relatively slow, allowing you sufficient time to react with parries:
Attack | Description | Recommended Action |
---|---|---|
Spin Attacks with Overhead Slam | Performs four spin strikes followed by an overhead slam. Parry each spin and then counter the overhead. | Parry |
AoE Ground Thrust | Raises its anchor to signal an area-of-effect ground thrust. Jump to avoid damage. | Parry and Jump |
Defeating the Chromatic Bruler

Commence the encounter by targeting the Chromatic Bruler’s head for massive initial damage. Manage your Action Points (AP) wisely to deliver medium-to-high elemental damage during your turns.
Anticipate the boss’s moves: if it rushes towards you, it will initiate its spin attack sequence. Each spin has a slight pause; parry each one and counter after the final slam. Conversely, if it remains stationary, watch for the yellow marker indicating an AoE thrust, at which point you should jump to dodge and counterattack.
Leveraging your party’s elemental strengths while executing successful parries and counters creates an effective strategy for overcoming the Chromatic Bruler.
Rewards for Defeating the Chromatic Bruler

Upon the successful defeat of the Chromatic Bruler, players will receive the following rewards:
