Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 presents players with challenging bosses, especially in the initial zones. One formidable enemy you will encounter is the Chromatic Gault.
Fortunately, you won’t encounter this boss unexpectedly; it must be actively pursued. Located behind a Paint Spike, Chromatic Gault requires players to prepare before facing it, giving you ample time to level up and gather resources.
Though the Chromatic Gault has a limited number of attacks, mastering its patterns can lead you to victory swiftly. Below are essential tips for defeating the Chromatic Gault in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
Where to Locate the Chromatic Gault

The Chromatic Gault is situated at the Stone Wave Cliffs. Ensure you’ve unlocked the Paint Break ability first, which you can obtain by locating four of the Sastro’s Lost Gestrals.
Once ready, head to Stone Wave Cliffs and utilize the Expedition Flag 78 Entrance for fast travel to Open Farm. If you haven’t unlocked this checkpoint yet, more exploration is needed.
From Old Farm, proceed along the main path, where you will encounter a Hexga accompanied by a Troubadour. Rather than bypassing them, move left and jump atop the shack to your right. Walk straight ahead, and you should discover a Paint block to break.
After breaking the block, you’ll reveal the Chromatic Gault in this converted area.
Preparation for the Chromatic Gault Encounter

The Chromatic Gault is particularly vulnerable to Fire damage. Therefore, optimal team choices include Maelle and Lune, with Verso also being a strong option thanks to his elemental skills.
Do not let your guard down; even with high level characters, many of its strikes can deal fatal damage. Expect to refine your strategy through several attempts to effectively learn its attack patterns.
Optimal Team Composition

My recommended team lineup comprises Lune (Level 61), Maelle (Level 63), and Verso (Level 67). Ideally, you should engage this optional boss after acquiring the Painted Power Picto to deal over 9, 999 damage.
Lune’s crucial skills include Hell, Wildfire, and Rebirth. Start with Wildfire for an opening attack when short on AP, and reserve Hell for maximum damage, while Rebirth serves as a backup if a teammate falls.
For healing, consider Healing Light or Revitalization, but utilize items for healing instead and rely on Picto or Lumina for optimal health management. Equip Lune with a Level 15 weapon, appropriately aligned with the fire element.

With Maelle, you’ll want to focus on skills such as Pyrolyse, Revenge, Rain of Fire, and Spark, which address varying damage levels. A Level 15 weapon enhances her overall fire damage output.

Lastly, equip Verso for maximum efficacy with skills like Strike Storm, From Fire, and Marking Shot. The right weapon boosts damage output during turns, especially through Perfection Rank bonuses.

Strategies to Defeat the Chromatic Gault

Inflicting Fire damage and stacking Burns is your primary strategy against the Chromatic Gault. The objective is to maintain continual Burn effects to maximize damage output, especially as old effects fade.
To manage AP effectively, consider Lune’s Stains, Maelle’s stances, and Verso’s Perfection ranks. Start with Wildfire or Hell for Lune based on available AP during your turn.
With Maelle, initiate with Rain of Fire to inflict damage and gain Offensive stance, increasing your next turn’s potential significantly.
For Verso, balance between parrying and taking hits to maintain Perfection Rank C while ensuring enough AP for skills like Strike Storm.
Equip Verso with items that reward AP upon successful parries, ensuring consistent action even at low AP levels. Mastering the timing of Chromatic Gault’s attack patterns is crucial.
Once you’ve mastered these patterns, consistently counterattack using your best skills for a swift victory.
Rewards for Defeating the Chromatic Gault

Upon defeating Chromatic Gault, your rewards include:
