The excitement of stepping into the overworld of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is palpable for fans of classic JRPGs. Just as it was in the ’90s, this expansive environment beckons players to explore every hidden alcove and secret passage, promising countless adventures.
Unlike other games where the overworld serves merely as a backdrop, Expedition 33 lays bare a plethora of secrets, lost items, and formidable foes. Adventurers are bound to encounter challenging enemies that demand strategic gameplay and adaptability.
Experienced players will likely recall that euphoric moment just after departing Spring Meadows, immediately seeking out the ominous Abbest Cave—only to be surprised by a punishingly strong, rosy-colored sheep. Lesson learned: some challenges are better approached later in the game.
Locating the Chromatic Abbest

The Chromatic Abbest resides within Abbest Cave, situated in the initial region of the game, which includes Spring Meadows and Gestral Village among other starting locales.
Based on my gameplay experience, the ideal time to confront this foe is after completing the Old Lumière events. At that point, Esquie gains the ability to break corals, allowing for easier navigation back to early areas.
Interestingly, some players have managed to take down the Chromatic Abbest soon after recruiting Sciel, one of the essential characters for this battle. Ultimately, success hinges on your tactic and perseverance.
Preparing for the Chromatic Abbest Encounter

When I took on this Nevron, my characters were around level 35, making it surprisingly manageable. However, lower-level players could also succeed with the right strategies.
One crucial aspect is ensuring you have a party member proficient in Dark damage, making Sciel an indispensable ally. Additionally, bring characters that deal elemental damage, as the Chromatic Abbest shows a propensity to resist physical attacks.
Its attack patterns are straightforward, allowing for some tactical maneuvering, though I did advocate for having protective Pictos on hand. If you’re fighting post-Old Lumière, you should have gained access to the Picto earned by defeating Renoir, which is beneficial to equip.
Optimal Party Composition

In my encounter with the Chromatic Abbest, my team consisted of Sciel, Lune, and Monoco. Sciel was our primary Dark damage dealer, Lune provided vital support with elemental attacks, and Monoco was included for his skill acquisition.
It’s worth noting that Gestral is a versatile member with robust abilities, although I used him primarily for buffs and debuffs during this fight.
As the battle unfolds, the emphasis should be on sustaining damage while healing when necessary; the victory will likely come with consistent effort.
Most Effective Skills

Your primary objective should be to maximize Dark damage skills from Sciel and utilize elemental skills for balance, as her foe naturally resists physical offensive maneuvers.
To optimize damage, consider using Marking Card for application rather than opting for Focused Foretell, since the former delivers higher Dark damage while also inflicting Mark.
Lune’s capabilities can adapt to either offense or defense, depending on your preferred strategy. I leaned towards a more aggressive build while evading Nevron’s strikes.
Monoco’s strategy mirrored this, focusing on offensive plays but also keeping a few supportive skills in the mix. Skills like Potier Energy enhance AP for the team, while Ramasseur Bonk serves as a solid source of Break damage and contributes to the Dark element.
Party Member | Skill | Description |
---|---|---|
Sciel | Medium Dark damage.2 hits. Applies 3 Foretell and Mark. | |
Deals low Dark damage to all enemies.3 hits. Consumes 1 Foretell per hit for increased damage. | ||
Deals medium single-target damage.2 to 6 hits. Uses weapon’s element. Applies 1 Foretell per hit. Critical Hits apply an additional Foretell. | ||
Moon | Heals the targeted ally by 30-50% Health and dispels Status effects. Consumes 2 Earth Stain: Costs 0 AP. | |
Deals low single-target Ice, Fire, Lightning, and Earth damage.4 hits. Critical Hits generate the corresponding Stain. | ||
Consumes all Stains to deal high elemental damage to the target. Can Break if 4 Stains are consumed. | ||
Monoco | Deals low single-target Dark damage.1 hit. Can Break. Agile Mask: fills 20% of the target’s Break Bar. | |
Gives 1-3 AP to all allies. Caster Mask: Gives 1 additional AP. | ||
Deals medium Earth damage to all enemies.3 hits. Applies Powerful to self. Heavy Mask: applies Powerful to all allies. |
Concentrate on channeling heavy damage with Sciel while allowing the other members to serve supportive roles.
With enough stacked Foretell, Sciel’s Firing Shadow can easily surpass the 9, 999 damage limit, due to its multi-hit nature. Avoid relying on high-damage single-hit moves to bypass this cap.
If Sciel wields an elemental weapon, particularly one that deals Dark damage, then Spectral Sweep is a vital skill for building up Foretell stacks, allowing for repeated usage.
My Lune had a crit-centric build, allowing her to use Elemental Trick and Mayhem consecutively while reigning in help from healing Light as necessary.
Monoco’s role revolved around buffing allies and restoring AP depending on the active Mask, alongside timely usage of Ramasseur Bonk to maintain the damage output.
Understanding Chromatic Abbest’s Attack Patterns

The Chromatic Abbest employs three types of attacks. These include a basic hit, a jump attack that lands three punches, and a spell reminiscent of the Évêque boss, which summons rocks toward a target.
Though the attacks are relatively easy to evade or parry, don’t underestimate their potential damage if you’re unprepared. Personally, I opted to parry based on my familiarity, but dodging is a safe alternative for those who prefer it.
Two attacks feature generic phrases, requiring players to depend on visual cues rather than on textual indicators, while the spell’s onset is clearly marked.
Attack Phrase Indicator | Attack Description | Recommended Action |
---|---|---|
“Chromatic Abbest attacks character.” | The Abbest walks towards a character and utilizes a slicing headbutt. | Parry is preferable. |
“Chromatic Abbest attacks character.”(Jumping) | This attack features three aerial jumps followed by a 3-hit combo; the initial jumps are quick, while the third is a bit slower. | Dodge or parry. |
“Chromatic Abbest casts a spell at character.” | Rocks rise from the ground toward a character, culminating in a damaging strike on the third rise. | Dodge or parry. |
It’s advisable to parry all of the Chromatic Abbest’s attacks. The cues are simple to grasp, and depending on your character’s level, the resulting damage may not be enough to incapacitate.
When the spell begins, keep your audio cues in mind. The rocks will rise twice, creating a rumble; the third sound cue is your indication to parry.
Strategies to Defeat the Chromatic Abbest

Upon engaging the Chromatic Abbest at level 30+, I observed it had a speed advantage over my allies, indicating that its Speed attributes were enhanced as it leveled up.
The nature of your build may lead to more defensive skillwork, which isn’t undesirable—especially for those who excel at parrying and can capitalize on openings to counterattack.

The Chromatic Abbest has a weak point in the center of its forehead that can be targeted for additional damage, so be ready to unleash your attacks during this window.
Starting off, utilize Marking Card to apply Mark and stack Foretell. With Monoco’s playstyle dependent on his active Mask, choose your skills wisely based on your ongoing strategy.
If you incur damage, utilize Lune’s healing abilities. Otherwise, focus on building up elemental Stains for future powerful attacks like Mayhem.
Concentrate efforts on avoiding physical damage, favoring Dark-based attacks instead. Monoco is beneficial here as well, facilitating AP recovery for Sciel through Energy Tint.
When Sciel enters the Twilight phase, decide whether to continue compiling Foretell or dive straight for the damage output. My tactic favored dealing damage, leading to a colossal 27k output with Firing Shadows on the Nevron.
By repeating Sciel’s attack a couple of times, the battle swiftly concluded in our favor, yielding rewards that matched our current level and enhancing our Pictos.
Defeating the Chromatic Abbest Early in the Game

If you find yourself eager to face the Chromatic Abbest when it’s clear the game warns you against it, you absolutely can.
The fight isn’t overly complicated; its attacks are straightforward to evade. The tougher aspect can be maintaining engagement, as the boss possesses approximately 80k HP, while your initial damage output may feel limited.
Thus, the most successful strategy for early encounters revolves around a Burn-centric build. Securing a victory with just Gustave, Lune, and Maelle will be challenging; aim to reach Gestral Village and recruit Sciel before your assault.
Here, instead of honing in on advanced tactics, just prioritize stacking Burn status effects. Employ Offensive Switch and Spark with Maelle or focus solely on Spark when speed is an issue and keeping the Burn effect active is paramount.
With Lune, consistently cast Immolation or utilize Wildfire once it’s available, while Sciel dishes out Dark-element skills. Don’t neglect to aim for the Nevron’s weakness.
Keep repeating this cycle until the Chromatic Abbest succumbs to your relentless onslaught. Although I do not recommend tackling this fight right at the game’s outset, if you’re determined, be aware that victory will boost each party member by 2-3 levels and yield a Picto with significantly more prowess than your current lineup.
Rewards for Defeating Chromatic Abbest

Upon vanquishing the Chromatic Abbest, players will obtain the valuable First Offensive Picto, known for its ability to quickly dispatch many endgame bosses, alongside essential crafting materials, experience points, and currency.
- 70, 876 XP
- 4, 073 Battle Loot
-
Picto – Level 10

In conclusion, while the initial impression of the First Offensive Picto may seem modest, its potential should not be underestimated. Pair it with other damage-focused Pictos, and you’ll find yourself winning battles before they even commence.
