Among the myriad of unusual entities that inhabit the universe of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Petanks stand out with their peculiar attributes. These enigmatic, bipedal spheres, notable for their silence and erratic movement, present a significant challenge due to limited turns during encounters. Successfully conquering them, however, rewards players with valuable items.
When you first face a Petank, they won’t engage you head-on. Instead, you’ll need to pursue them throughout their domains until they land on special illuminated stones. This chase is essential for initiating combat.
After herding a Petank onto its designated stone, you can start the battle. It’s crucial to strategize your skill sequences and attacks effectively since maximizing your damage output within the allotted turns is key to success. Each Petank defeated grants a consistent set of rewards including specific items based on your progress in the game. These include:
- 1x ItemA
- 5x ItemB
- 5x ItemC (varies based on game progression)

Petanks have a tendency to respawn even after fleeing when you rest your party. However, defeating them permanently removes their presence from the game. This guide will illustrate where to locate all Petanks in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
Ancient Sanctuary
Your initial encounter with a Petank will occur at the entrance to the Ancient Sanctuary, near Gestral Village. This encounter is straightforward as the game provides assistance in directing the Petank towards its stone.
For this Petank, approach from the right to guide it up the wooden ramp. Once cornered at its stone, you’ll be ready to engage in battle. Utilizing skills like Lune’s Burn can help deplete its health more rapidly, as this early Petank possesses less health compared to its successors.

Esquie’s Nest
Upon reaching the Entrance flag at Esquie’s Nest, proceed north to discover a cave adorned with glowing lanterns. Below the cavern, you’ll spot the Petank near some vases.
Leap down to initiate the chase, directing the Petank toward the glowing stones located near the main vase in the cave’s northwest corner. Engaging in combat once cornered will require precision with parry and counter techniques, as this Battle is slightly tougher than the first.
Stone Wave Cliffs
In the Stone Wave Cliffs, a Petank is positioned near the Old Farm area. This elusive creature tends to dodge capture, requiring you to push it down the wooden ramp into a rocky opening.
This particular Petank has the ability to summon Nevron allies to aid in battle. Focus on eliminating these allies first, as defeating them will lower the Petank’s defenses significantly, allowing for greater damage during your assaults. Emphasizing parry and counter-attacks will streamline the process of taking down the Nevrons.
Forgotten Battlefield
After completing Act 1, you can access the Petank located near the Expedition 41 flag, Vanguard Point, known as the Forgotten Battlefield. The Petank can be found within a small crater to your left.
Guide it toward the small purple light adjacent to some dilapidated fortifications. In battle, the Petank will either unleash six ranged attacks or one melee strike. As with prior encounters, countering its moves will maximize your damage potential.
Keep in mind, you have only three turns to defeat this Petank, making strategic skill use essential to achieving maximum damage efficiently.
Frozen Hearts
Within the region of Frozen Hearts, located between the Glacial Falls and Iced Heart expedition flags, you will encounter a red Petank near a piano in a partially destroyed station. Approach from the right to usher the Petank towards its shrine while navigating around a gap in the floor.
To engage it in battle, maneuver the Petank through the doorway to the other side, initiating a First Strike. Remember, this Petank will flee after three turns, but successful counter-attacks can reset this timer. Strategic parrying is crucial for emerging victorious.
Mermaid – First
Before facing the Glissando boss, you can find the first Sirène Petank. Instead of engaging the boss, take the left path downwards to a spacious area where the Petank awaits at the bottom.
Utilize the glowing rope to descend, guiding the Petank around the debris on the ground. After circling around, maneuver it up the staircase to the purple shrine at the top. This Petank is resilient, starting with five shields and gaining one each turn, so utilizing Maelle’s Rule Breaker skill effectively is vital.
As an added advantage, consider challenging the nearby Gestral merchant for access to upgraded weaponry.
Mermaid – Second
Continuing through the underground area before reaching the Sewing Atelier, where the optional Tisseur boss is located, you will find a Petank near a large, illuminated statue. Guide it toward the dark blue doorway behind the statue.
Once inside, navigate through various metal structures while maneuvering the Petank toward the glowing stones by the cliff’s edge. Again, you’ll have three turns for this fight, but utilize counter-attacks for additional turns while learning the Petank’s attack patterns.
Into The Monolith
Upon accessing the Monolith site, navigate through the area known as Inside The Monolith. Beyond the Tainted Cliff, you’ll discover a Ferris wheel in the distance, where a Petank stands by a small windmill.

To capture the Petank, push it around to the cliff edge and toward the brightly glowing stones. As it attempts to evade, your task is to circle back and force it to retreat along the pathway. This encounter features a more robust Petank, so focus on using Free Aim to strike at its core for maximized damage efficiency.
As always, parrying is essential, especially as this Petank will inflict Dizzy status on your party members with its attacks.
Isle of the Eyes
Having navigated the primary Petanks, let’s explore those found in optional regions. The Isle of the Eyes sits northwest of Visages Island, above The Reacher locale.
To gain access, unlock Esquie’s flying ability by progressing to Act 3. After entering the isle, descend the cliffs to your right; you’ll find a Petank within a cave structure beneath the rocks.
To provoke the duel, approach from its right. Guide it into open space, navigating it behind a stone column before pushing it toward the red trees. Beware, this Petank is infamous for its frustrating evasion tactics; counter-attacks won’t delay its fleeing time, and you’re limited to three turns for the win. Leveling up to around Level 70 is advisable to ensure your damage output suffices.
In this battle, standard attacks are less effective until you manage to force out the green orb, ensuring maximum damage with your free aim shots. Utilizing Luminas will significantly aid in this encounter.

Endless Night Sanctuary
From the Expedition 46 flag in Endless Night Sanctuary, navigate underneath the stone arch and take the left path in the large open area containing a statue. Then make another left to pass through a crawl space until you reach an open area. Stick to the right and walk through the stone archway where you will find the purple Petank standing.
Push it right and up the pathway until you are near a small rock opening. At this junction, circle back to approach it via a side path, gently nudging it into the shrine area. You’ll have three turns to defeat it, so be sure to launch your most powerful attacks while managing its incoming strikes.
This particular Petank has no designated weak points, making it imperative that you unleash your strongest skills and weapons to achieve victory.
Overworld – Chromatic Petank
Located on the main continent, eastward near The Manor, the Chromatic Petank requires the use of Esquie’s flying ability for access.
Dealing with the Chromatic Petank isn’t overly complex. Push it southward onto the lake and around until it stands between two crumbling columns. From here, circle back toward the water and direct it northward. After surpassing the orange trees, guide the Chromatic Petank along the column-lined path to its shrine positioned beneath a menacing stone face.
This encounter differs from previous ones, as the Chromatic Petank does not flee. Instead, it summons smaller Petanks that escape quickly, regenerating its health each time they do so. Rather than focusing on the smaller ones, prioritize applying damage effects like Burn on the main Petank to maintain a higher damage output to outpace the regeneration.
To have a successful engagement, consider being at least Level 60 and equip strong weapons like Maelle’s and Lune’s offerings beforehand.

Victorious players will reap rewards from defeating the Chromatic Petank, including an item Picto, 2x Grandiose Chroma Catalyst, and 5x Colour of Lumina, along with the achievement/trophy titled Carreau Parfait.
