The game, which was released on February 11, 2025, is plagued by frequent crashes on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, leading to considerable buyer’s remorse among its players.
According to the PlayStation Store’s refund guidelines, purchasers are generally ineligible for refunds if they request one more than 14 days post-purchase or after having downloaded the game. However, deviations from this strict policy have been reported.
Refunds Granted to Some PS5 Players
A notable case surfaced on March 5 when Reddit user Garuff shared a screenshot revealing approval of a £115 refund for their pre-order of the Civilization 7 Deluxe and the Founder’s Edition Upgrade. This refund request came a striking 22 days after the game’s launch, even though the user had already downloaded and played the game. The player’s dissatisfaction stemmed from frustrating UI problems and consistent crashes, which ultimately prompted them to seek a refund.
Additional players have echoed similar experiences, expressing astonishment at these refund approvals. Since the 2019 update to the PlayStation Store’s refund policy, restrictions have drawn criticism, particularly regarding the prohibition against refunds for downloaded games or accessed content. Nevertheless, instances of exceptions being made for faulty products have been highlighted.
In Garuff’s case, after informing PlayStation Support that they had raised concerns with developer Firaxis Games about continuous crashes—occurring approximately every 40 minutes—the refund was processed as a goodwill gesture, despite clearly being outside typical refund protocols.
This leniency in refund processing has cast a renewed spotlight on the game’s ongoing issues, which have been evident since its early access phase. Players reported a host of problems, including a confusing user interface and a lack of substantial mechanics and customization options compared to previous installments in the franchise, which contributed to mixed reviews on platforms like Steam.
