Civilization 7 Brings Exciting Updates for Steam Deck Gamers

Overview of Civilization 7’s Steam Deck Verification

  • Civilization 7 has achieved Steam Deck Verified status, making it a standout entry for the franchise.
  • This title marks the first in the series to secure the Steam Deck Verified badge.

Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 will be fully compatible with the Steam Deck, as announced by publisher 2K. This new installment is set to enhance the lineup of 4X strategy games that can be played seamlessly on Valve’s handheld device.

First revealed at the Summer Game Fest in June 2024, Civilization 7 quickly garnered attention and set a concrete release date of February 11, 2025.

As part of the pre-launch communications, 2K announced via Twitter that Civilization 7 has officially been labeled as Steam Deck Verified. This means players can expect an optimized experience, including full controller compatibility and support for the handheld’s native resolution.

Civilization 7: A First for the Series

Civilization 7 is a trailblazer in the franchise as the first game to attain the Steam Deck Verified status. Its predecessor, Civilization 6, falls under the “Playable”category on the Steam Deck, yet it wasn’t awarded the Verified badge. This is primarily due to functional limitations, such as inconsistent controller icon displays and the necessity for on-screen keyboard text inputs. Additionally, Civ 6 has faced challenges regarding text readability on the compact 7.4-inch display, which has been cited on its Steam page.

Despite its limitations, Civilization 6 remains a functional experience on the device, especially considering its initial release occurred over five years before the launch of the Steam Deck.

Diverse Platforms for Civilization 7

Notably, while Civilization 7 is designed to support the Steam Deck, it will not be exclusive to this platform. A game seeking Steam Deck Verified status must meet specific performance criteria. Its successful adaptation for this handheld is particularly notable given that Civilization 7 is also confirmed for release on the Nintendo Switch, which possesses more limited hardware capabilities compared to the Steam Deck. Importantly, the Steam Deck exceeds the minimum technical specifications required for Civilization 7, which include 8GB of RAM, GTX 1050 or RX 460 GPUs, and i5-4690 or Ryzen 3 1200 processors, among similar configurations.

In addition to PC and the Nintendo Switch, Civilization 7 will also grace the latest generations of Xbox and PlayStation consoles. This forthcoming title is set to break the mold, becoming the first in the series to enjoy simultaneous launches on PC and consoles, a significant departure from previous iterations that launched exclusively on PC before later expanding to other platforms.
