Chrome on Android Introduces AI-Powered Read Aloud Feature
Recently, Martin discussed the incorporation of AI capabilities within Chrome, particularly those driven by Google’s Gemini technology. A noteworthy update is the emergence of a new read-aloud feature for Chrome on Android devices, designed to narrate web pages akin to a podcast format.
This innovative feature was highlighted by Mishaal Rahman from Android Authority. Google has been steadily developing AI-driven functionalities across its services, including Search and Docs, and has made significant strides with NotebookLM. By utilizing the advanced models of Gemini, Google has created a way to generate podcast-style audio for in-depth research topics. This latest enhancement aims to seamlessly integrate these capabilities into everyday browsing experiences.
Enhancing Accessibility with an Engaging Listening Experience
Previously, Chrome’s read-aloud function focused on accessibility, allowing users to engage with web content audibly. To activate this, users could simply click the three-dot menu icon on a web page and select “Listen to this page”.However, this method often resulted in an uninspired, robotic narration.
Now, with the introduction of a new button located at the bottom left corner of the screen, users can enjoy a more dynamic experience. By tapping this button, users have access to an AI-driven podcast-style playback, featuring two AI hosts, reminiscent of the experience offered by NotebookLM. Moreover, users can easily revert to the traditional text-to-speech mode by tapping the button again.

Availability and User Experience
The testing phase for this functionality commenced in June 2025 within Chrome’s Canary channel and has now transitioned into the stable version. Users can expect to find the Audio Overview feature in Chrome for Android version 140.0.7339.124. However, as the rollout is gradual, not all users may have immediate access to it.
One of the most appealing aspects of this feature is its ability to convey entire web pages in podcast format, rather than merely summarizing content. This functionality offers significant advantages, especially for lengthy articles. It allows users the flexibility to listen when they prefer not to read extensively. Nonetheless, privacy concerns may arise, particularly if the playback is generated without local device processing.
