Skeet Ulrich, renowned for his role as Billy Loomis in the original Scream and its recent sequel Scream VI, recently shared insights about his audition for Christopher Nolan’s anticipated film, The Odyssey. Although his appearance as Loomis revitalized interest in his character, uncertainty surrounds his potential return for Scream 7. However, with Matthew Lillard, who portrayed Billy’s accomplice Stu Macher, confirmed for the upcoming installment, it leaves the door open for Ulrich’s possible comeback.
During a panel at MEGACON Orlando alongside Lillard, where ScreenRant was present, Ulrich revealed he was among the final three contenders for a yet undisclosed role in Nolan’s project. Despite his dedication and passion for the script, he ultimately did not secure the part. In his own words, he shared:
It’s not easy at all [having a life full of rejection].I just read for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. It got down to me and two other dudes, and I found out last night it ain’t me. But, yeah, it’s almost a weekly experience of putting yourself out there for things and hoping and falling in love with material, then having to move on. There are big wins, so that makes it palatable, but it’s a lot of rejection.
But when you do what you love, which I think is one of the most important things that you can do in this world — how many of you are artists, actors and singers and writers and painters? Yeah, it’s not an easy life, but you’re doing what you love to do. So, when you get those moments that you get to do it, it makes everything else fall away. I think it’s crucial that you find what you love to do. My kids are now almost 24, and it’s something I’ve really instilled in them, that they find that thing that they truly, truly love to do, and that they never give up once they find out what that is in pursuing it. So, I hope that you can do that, as well.
Don’t hold Hollywood as the standard of success for if you’re a filmmaker, in any regard. The success is you finding that you love it and doing it in any way you can, whether that’s making movies with your phone, or with your friends or whatever. It’s no different for us. People just put up a lot of money for us to have really cool toys to make those things with, but it’s the same love and the same passion that you have for it. It’s no different than what Matt and I have.
Implications for The Odyssey
New Additions to The Odyssey Cast

The current cast list for The Odyssey showcases a strong collaboration between Nolan and several of his previous actors, including Benny Safdie, Matt Damon, Robert Pattinson, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin, and Anne Hathaway. New faces join the ensemble as well, comprising Jon Bernthal, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, John Leguizamo, Samantha Morton, and Charlize Theron. Specific character details remain undisclosed, leaving excitement in the air.
Given that Ulrich only learned about not landing the role just before the panel took place on February 7, it suggests that the casting process for The Odyssey is still unfolding, with the potential for new members to join the cast soon. Known for featuring expansive casts, Nolan’s projects typically embrace a broad array of talent, as seen in his recent release, Oppenheimer.
Reflections on Skeet Ulrich’s Missed Opportunity
A Disappointment, Yet a Wise Decision

Ulrich’s versatile acting career ranges from his role as Jughead’s father in Riverdale to his portrayal of a notorious killer in Scream. Though the specific role he auditioned for in The Odyssey remains a mystery, the extensive ensemble and depth of the storyline suggest that it may have been a smaller part. While it is disappointing that Ulrich won’t feature in Nolan’s star-studded lineup, this decision may ultimately be beneficial.
The casting process is pivotal to the success of a film, and Christopher Nolan has consistently demonstrated his ability to select the right actors for the roles that suit them best. His recent film, Oppenheimer, garnered immense acclaim, taking home the award for Best Ensemble at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, among many others. With production expected to initiate on the Sicilian segment of The Odyssey soon, it appears that the casting choices are nearing completion.
