Chrissy Metz Discusses Her Path to Forgiveness Regarding Her Stepfather
During her recent appearance on The Jamie Kern Lima Show, Chrissy Metz opened up about the abuse she endured from her stepfather.
The actress candidly spoke about the “mental, physical, emotional abuse”she experienced at their hands, recalling how he would weigh her in the kitchen and even threaten to restrict her access to food. Metz shared:
“The emotional stuff… they’re like little nicks, little cuts and eventually you bleed out. It is painful.”
Metz is now dedicated to “slowly but surely”healing from her past wounds, which stemmed from a deep-rooted sense of being “unworthy.”She elaborated on how these experiences still impact her when entering a room, as she often feels the need to be a “people pleaser”and a “peacemaker”. She wondered:
“Why does my weight equate to my worthiness? Or why does it bother him so much? What is he projecting onto me? What is that? And as a 12-year-old kid, it’s like, how do you reconcile that in your mind?”
Through therapy, Metz has managed to address some of her trauma, enabling her to forgive her mother, who had been “struggling”herself for years. She also attempted to view her stepfather’s actions through a compassionate lens, recognizing the possibility that his harsh methods stemmed from his own pain. Metz stated:
“Now as an adult, I’m like, OK, maybe he actually loved me, didn’t know how to express it, and did it in such a difficult way that he thought he was being helpful. Like, he doesn’t want me to be unhealthy. He doesn’t want me to be a certain way. But also hurt people hurt people. And he was, I think, very hurt by his own father.”
In her 2018 memoir, This Is Me: Loving the Person You Are Today, Metz shared more about the abuse she faced from her stepfather, whom she referred to as Trigger. She detailed incidents of physical aggression, recounting how he would shove, slap, and punch her throughout her childhood.
Metz reflected on how, during her younger years when she weighed around 130-140 pounds, her stepfather would berate her by exclaiming “Good God almighty!”whenever she stepped on the scale. In hindsight, while writing her memoir, Metz recognized that the weight she once thought made her “gigantic”was something she would now accept. She added:
“By then the beating had escalated. One time he hit me, and I looked right in his face. If I had a gun, I thought, I would shoot you,”
During her recent appearance on The Jamie Kern Lima Show, Chrissy Metz shared that her stepfather recently passed away, presenting a challenging moment for her, as he had been one of the few father figures in her life alongside her acting coach. After writing her memoir, her stepfather had distanced himself from her, feeling betrayed.
While he was in hospice, Metz penned a heartfelt letter to him expressing her hurt while also affirming her love and seeking his forgiveness for any distress she may have caused. In the letter, she conveyed that she had forgiven him.
Her sister read this letter to her stepfather while Metz was on FaceTime, and he was able to communicate with her one last time. He expressed gratitude and conveyed his love for her, which Metz described as “very important.”She emphasized the sincerity of her feelings, stating that she truly loved her stepfather and felt “really grateful”for him.
